Lester S. Grant

Lebanon, NH–Lester S. Grant, 86, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

He was born in Hartford, VT on July 20, 1916, a son of R. Edwin and Harriet M. (Stevens) Grant, and attended school in Wilder, VT. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Army from 1940-1945. On July 23, 1941 he was married to Alice Martin in Chicopee, MA.

He lived in Wilder and was a surgical technician at the Veterans Affair Hospital in White River Jct and Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover until his retirement in 1973. He lived in Morgan, VT from 1975 until he returned to Wilder in 1995. He had lived in Lebanon for the past five years.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Peters; two brothers, Ray and Chester Grant; and three sisters, Lydia Slocum, Ruth Gray and Anna Ricker. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patricia Clough of Vernon, VT; two sons, Daniel Grant of Enfield and Paul Grant of Lebanon; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Allyn Grant of Sun City, CA; two sisters, Harriet LaBelle and Ramona Welch, both of Wilder; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held Wednesday from 6-8 pm at Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. A funeral service was held Thursday at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring at the Christian Street Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, NH 03756.

Robert D. “Bob” Grant

W. Canaan, NH–Robert D. “Bob” Grant, 63, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at his home in West Canaan following a long illness. He was born in Hanover, NH, November 18, 1937. He grew up in Bridgewater, VT and graduated from Woodstock (VT) High School in 1957. He had been a resident of W. Canaan for the last 34 years. Bob had been a truck driver for Twin State Fruit for many years and had also served as a bus driver for the Mascoma School District for 10 years. He was a member of the Lebanon Lodge of Elks for 34 years; was a member of the VT National Grange; had been a State of NH Deputy Forest Fire Warden for several years; was the representative from the Canaan Fire Dept. to the Upper Valley Mutual Aid Association for several years; and had been a member of the Canaan Volunteer Fire Dept. for 22 years, retiring as a First Lieutenant in February 2001. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He leaves his wife of 36 years, Pauline (Bellavance) Grant of West Canaan, NH, whom he married June 5, 1965; his mother: Ramona Welch of Wilder, VT; his foster-mother: Pearl Townsend of Bridgewater Corners, VT; a son: Douglas P. Grant of Lebanon, NH; a daughter: Rebecca C. Jones of Canaan, NH; a foster-son: Fred Cummings of Canaan, NH; several brothers and sisters; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his foster-father: Paul Townsend.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Friday evening from 6-9. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday morning at 10 am at the Sacred Heart Church of Lebanon. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with a reception in the church hall following the services.

Barbara May Peters

Hartford, VT–Barbara May Peters, 50, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 21, 1948, in Hanover; a daughter of Lester S. and Alice M. (Martin) Grant, and grew up in Hartford, VT, where she graduated from high school.

She worked in the Medical Records Dept. at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover for several years, and on Feb. 10, 1973, in Norwich, was married to Murrel R. “Pete” Peters.

They lived a few years in the Upper Valley, then lived for 12 years in Georgia. Upon returning to Hartford, Mrs. Peters worked at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband of Hartford Village; a son, Marc S. Peters of Wilder; a grandson, Jonathan; her parents of Lebanon; two brothers, Paul Grant of Lebanon and Daniel Grant of Enfield; a sister Patricia G. Clough of Vernon, VT; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara was a very selfless person and loved helping others whenever she could. She enjoyed her family, and especially her very first grandchild, Jonathan, who was the light of her life.
