Lettie E. Barbour

Canaan, NH–Lettie Barbour, died in the Mt. Ascutney Hospital on March 1. She was born on August 5, 1915 in West Canaan. She was the daughter of Truman and Lottie (Austin) Clark. She attended schools in West Canaan and Canaan. Also attended Wilfred Academy of Cosmetology in Boston, MA.

She married Harold Barbour on August 27, 1948 in Grace Chapel on Goose Pond Rd. They lived their married life in Hartland, VT. She volunteered helping with church and fire dept. suppers.

She was a member of the Darn It Woman’s Club, Emblem Club, and American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing bingo. Many tiny hats were knitted by her for premature babies.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1986 also, John, Theodore, Horace, Raymond, Elwin, Clayton and Calvin – her seven brothers. Three sisters; Gertrude, Rena and Arleen..

She is survived by her sister Gladys Chesser of Morriston, FL and Grace Reney of Enfield. And many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service was conducted at the Congregational Church in Hartland on March 6 by Rev. Robert Moyer. Donations may be made in her memory to the Hartland Memorial Library, for Children’s Books, PO Box 137, Hartland, VT 05048.

Eva M. Paquette

Enfield, NH–Eva M. Paquette, 85, died Thursday March 16, 2000 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Rochester, VT on April 28, 1914, a daughter of the late Dennis and Ella (Asbury) Murphy. An Enfield resident for most of her life, she was a communicant of St. Helena’s Parish. She was married to Joseph T. Paquette, Sr., who died Feb. 5, 1978. For many years she was employed by the Baltic Woolen Mills in Enfield, and later in the housekeeping dept. of Dartmouth College in Hanover. She enjoyed crocheting and had made many intricately designed doilies.

Friends were able to call at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St., Lebanon, NH on Sunday evening. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 10 am in the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Rainville M.S. officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield.

Elizabeth L. Orcutt

Hanover, NH–Elizabeth (Betty) Orcutt died March 4, 2000 after a long and satisfying life. She was in her 90th year.

Betty came to Hanover in 1932 from Berlin, NH, after studying elementary education at Keene Normal School.

She married her husband Stan in 1935 and had a son, William S. Orcutt of Manchester, NH; and a daughter, Sally Page of Hanover, NH; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Betty taught first grade in Hanover for 42 years and touched the lives of well over 1200 children. She was particularly renowned for easing out those first loose teeth of her students.

Betty was a lifelong lover of the ocean and became known as “Betty Beach” by her friends in Ogunquit, ME where she and Stan spent their summers.

A memorial service will be held for Betty at St. Thomas Church, Wheelock St., Hanover, NH on Saturday March 25th at 2 pm.

Florence A. Garnhum

Enfield, NH–Florence A. Garnhum, 80, died Tuesday morning April 20, 2001 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Enfield Center, NH December 8, 1920, a daughter of the late Harry L. & Bertha M. (Lewis) Bailey. A lifelong resident of Enfield Center she was a longtime member of the Earnest Workers Club, and enjoyed plants, flowers, knitting and art. She was married in May 1941 to Charles W. Garnhum who died April 29, 1980.

She was predeceased by her husband and a brother, Oscar Bailey.

Survivors include three daughters: Diane White and Jean Williams, both of Enfield Center, and Deborah Truman of Grafton. One son, Scott Garnhum of Kokomo, IN. A sister, Dorothy Emerson of Enfield Center. Seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four nieces.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home. Rte 4 in Enfield, Friday evening from 7-9 pm. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 pm in the funeral home with the Rev. Patricia Williams officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Montcalm Cemetery in Enfield Cemetery.

The family suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: The Enfield Center Fire Dept., Enfield Center, NH 03749.

Harry E. Powell

Orange, NH–Harry Powell, 97, died on Saturday, March 11, 2000, at the McCoy Nursing Home in Newport following a long illness. He was born in Danbury, NH on May 18, 1902, a son of the late Oria and Carrie (Wescott) Powell. He lived 18 years on the Height of the Land area in Grafton, NH, before moving to Orange, where he spent most of his life as a logger. He had also worked in the Baltic Woolen Mills in Enfield, and was a former road agent for the town of Orange. He loved animals and kept a small farm in Orange. He was married May 15, 1923 to Martha R. (Brown) Powell.

Mr. Powell is survived by: Barbara Dauphiniais, daughter, of Grafton, NH; Ruby McAllister and Rose Buckwold, daughters, of Canaan; Arlene Normandin, daughter, of Hillsboro, NH; Louise O’Shea, daughter, of North Pole, Alaska; many nieces, nephews and cousins; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: Martha R. Powell, wife, who died Oct. 7, 1984; Walter R. Powell, son, who died June 30, 1988; Laura Ford, daughter, who died December 26, 1996; Florence, sister; Thurman Powell, brother; Harold Decato, half-brother, and Ora, Doris and Bernice, half-sisters.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St., Lebanon, NH, on Monday evening, March 13th, from 7-9 pm.

Graveside services will be held in the spring in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Grafton, NH.

Phyllis E. Rogers

Lebanon, NH–Phyllis E. Rogers, 74, died at her home Thursday, March 8, 2000 following a long illness. She was born in Dorchester, NH on July 5, 1925, and had been a resident of the Canaan, NH area most of her life until moving to Lebanon when she was married to her husband of 30 years, Stanley F. Rogers, Sr. on Feb. 18, 1970. She enjoyed arts and crafts; crocheting; and wreath making for the Enfield-Mascoma Lions Club. She was a member and past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post of White River Jct., VT where she was also Buddy Poppy Chairman.

A memorial service will be held Monday afternoon at 2 pm in the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St., Lebanon, NH. The Pastor John Crilley will officiate. Friends may visit one half hour prior to the service.

Ramona Marie St. Amand

East Hartford, CT–Ramona Marie St. Amand, 71, a former longtime resident of East Hartford, CT, died Saturday, January 13, 2001 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Hartland, VT on May 24, 1929, a daughter of the late Horace W. & Lyndall M. (Alger) Sawyer, and was a graduate of Hartland, VT High School-Class of 1947. She received her Masters Degree in Education from Central CT State University. For 19 years, she worked for the City of Hartford, CT as an instructor in the Adult Education Dept. She also taught at the Morse School of Business in Hartford, CT. She had been a resident of the Upper Valley area NH for the last year after living in East Hartford, CT for over 30 years.

She is survived by on daughter: Sherry Demers of Grantham, NH; three sons: Steven Rocke and Scott Rocke, both of Canaan, NH and Gary Rocke of Enfield, NH; one sister: Geneva Day of Vernon, CT; four grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, January 17th at 11 am in the Community Lutheran Church of Enfield, NH. The Pastor John Crilley officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of the Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon, NH.

Freida Johanna Warde

Orange, NH–Freida Johanna Warde, December 28, 1905 – December 26, 2000.

Survived by: Bernard Warde, son, Haines Falls, NY; Anita Watson, daughter, Orange, NH; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: Paul Warde, husband; Heinrich Meyer, father; Martha (Kahne) Meyer, mother; 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Freida J. Warde, 94, died at her home, Tuesday, December 26, 2000, following a long illness. She was born in Stelle, Germany, December 28, 1905, a daughter of the late Henrich & Martha (Kahne) Meyer. She came to this country in the early 1930’s and was married to Paul Warde in 1934. Mr. Warde died in 1988. For many years, she had done domestic work for local families in order to provide money for her family back in Germany. She had lived in Westchester, NY; the Bronx, NY; Haines Falls, NY; and the Catskills area of New York before moving to Orange, NH in 1989. She was an active member of the Canaan Senior Center.

She had knitted hundreds of hats for use at the Intensive Care Nursery at Alice Peck Day Extended Care Facility. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, and caring for her family.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside Committal Services will be held in the spring in the Haines Falls Cemetery in Haines Falls, NY. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: The Canaan F.A.S.T. Squad, Canaan, NH 03741 or to: The Visiting Nurse Alliance of VT & NH (VNA/VNH), 20 S. Main St., White River Jct., VT 05001.

Burton G. Curry

Canaan, NH–Burton G. Curry, 100, a long-time resident of West Canaan, NH passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2000 in Deland, FL.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth T. Curry, two daughters, Margaret E. Hobbs of Hamden, CT and Mary K. Marshall of Deland, FL. Numerous grand, great grands and great great grandchildren.

Dorothy Curry Miller, 80, hid eldest daughter, preceded him in death on December 1, 2000 in Deland, FL.

Raymond T. Brown

From the October 16, 2000 issue of The Country Chronicle

Enfield, NH–Raymond T. Brown, 77, died Friday morning, October 6, 2000 at the Alice Peck Day Extended Care Facility in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Canaan, NH on October 27, 1922 and had attended local schools. A lifelong Enfield resident, he had been employed by the former Baltic Woolen Mills, and later worked for many years as a custodian at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1992. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Faith Baptist Church of Canaan, NH and the Enfield/Mascoma Lions Club. He enjoyed travel and spending time with friends. He was married to Sadie (Sanders) Brown who died October 27, 1992.

He leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Enfield/Canaan area. He was predeceased by his wife and one brother. Graveside committal services will be announced in the near future by the Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon, NH.
