Phyllis A. Disbrow

Canaan, NH–Phyliss Anne Disbrow of Ocala, Fl and Canaan died Sunday May 5, 2002 in Ocala following a brief illness.

She was born July 30, 1932, in New York, a daughter of Philip B. and Mary (Faranda) Spano. She attended Hofstra University, and completed her registered nurse degree at Brooklyn Methodist School of Nursing in 1955, then worked at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center, NY.

In 1957, she was married to Robert F. Disbrow, then raised a family and moved in 1971 to Canaan, where she became involved in community and service work. She supported Girl and Boy Scouts, 4-H, Canaan Players, handcraft groups and the Lioness Club. She was charter president for the Canaan Club, First New Hampshire District Governess for Lioness and a surgical nurse at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital for several years before starting a successful Avon business.

She was an avid flower gardener and established large flower gardens that will stand forever as a memorial to her dedication to beauty. She retired in 1989 to Ocala, FL where she continued to be active in community affairs.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Lou Disbrow; two sons, Craig Disbrow of Canaan and Andrew Disbrow of Grafton; a sister, Mildred Spano, a sister, Doris Reinceke of Morristown, NJ; many niesces and nephews and all of Ocala.

A memorial service will be held in August in Canaan.

William O. Neily Sr.

Canaan, NH– William O. Neily Sr., 85, died Saturday night November 16, 2002 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Canaan Center, NH January 16, 1917, a son of the late Blanche (Butman) & August B. Neily Sr. A lifelong resident of Canaan Ctr., he attended local schools and played football for Canaan High School. He worked for the C.C.C. Camps during the Great Depression. Later he was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Windsor, VT retiring after more than 35 years of service. Mr. Neily loved baseball and the Red Sox; his beautiful and often photographed flower gardens; and reading.

He was predeceased by five sisters: Eleanor Picard, Violet Fields, Florence Levesque, Charlotte Neily, and Caroline Woodbury; and two brothers: Harry Neily and Wesley Neily.

Survivors include his wife: Doris Buckman of Canaan, NH; four children: William O. Neily Jr. of Springfield, MA, Gayle Cook of Franklin, NH, Stephen E. Neily of Lakeworth, FL, and Patricia E. Downing of North Augusta, SC; a sister: Irene Dulac of Lebanon, NH; a brother: August Neily Jr. of Canaan, NH; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home, 433 US Rte 4, Enfield, NH Wednesday morning from 10-11 am. Funeral services will follow at 11 am in the funeral home with the Rev. Glen Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH.

Mary Alice (MacDonald) Obermyer

Canaan, NH–Mary Alice (MacDonald) Obermyer, 92, died September 3rd, 2002 at her home on Goose Pond Rd, Canaan, NH following a short illness.

She was born on January 28, 1910 in Newton, MA, the third of five children of the late Eltie Blanche (Wallace) and Hugh Agustin MacDonald of Nova Scotia.

She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brothers Vincent Wallace MacDonald and Hector Agustin MacDonald, her sisters Catherine Louise Higgins and Margarite Grace Sullivan, and her granddaughter Gabrielle Murphy.

She spent many of her early school age years in the care of her aunts Electa, Catherine and Jessie MacDonald in Norwood, MA. She graduated from Newton High School in 1928 and Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in 1934.

Mary Alice married Alfred A. Obermyer October 9th 1934 in Newton where they lived until their retirement. In 1970 they retired to West Canaan, NH where she hosted numerous gatherings for family and friends and left a vast store of wonderful memories. Known and loved by many as Nana, Mum, Al, Alice, Mary Alice and Obee, she will be missed, yet remembered for her sparkling eyes and laughter, her energy, compassion, courage, graciousness and motherly wisdom.

Through the years she was involved in providing healthcare to patients, friends, and relatives. She also volunteered in many community and church activities including, 4-H, Canaan Meals on Wheels and Upper Valley Hospice. She was an enthusiastic member of the Canaan chapter of TOPS and graduated in 1999 to KOPS status.

Survivors include her four children: Jean Pearson of Center Sandwich, NH; Karen Murphy of Lyme, NH; Edward (Ned) Obermyer of Vancouver, WA; Gretchen Droesch of Canterbury, CT; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-granchildren, cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service of thanksgiving on September 28, 2002 at 11 am at the Methodist Church in Sandwich, NH. In lieu of flowers and by her request, donations may be made to the local chapter of Hospice.

Jean Webster

Canaan, NH–Jean Webster, 80, died Sunday morning September 8th, 2002 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH following a brief illness. She was born in Hanover, NH July 16, 1922, a daughter of the late Joseph & Harried (Fidgen) Cocksedge. A lifelong resident of the Upper Valley, she grew up on Hanover, and lived most of her adult life in Canaan, NH. She had been employed at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover and later as a housekeeper at the Canaan Inn. She was a member of the Mascoma Senior Center in Canaan. Her greatest love in life was her family, and she also enjoyed reading and bingo.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl F. Webster, Sr., who died June 27, 1983 and by one sister and seven brothers.

Survivors include two daughters: Cathlene Shattuck of Canaan, NH and Carline Proctor of Bradford, VT; two sons: Burtom “Jimmy” Johnson of Grafton, NH and Carl F. Webster, Jr. of Manchester, NH; one brother: Joseph Cocksedge of Stoneham, MA; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home, Rte 4, in Enfield on Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Patricia Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH.

Daniel Isaac Quimby

Canaan, NH–Daniel I. Quimby, 70, of Canaan died on Tuesday at the VA Hospital in White River Jct. He was born in Enfield on December 4, 1931 a son of the late Charles and Mabel (Austin) Quimby. He has been a lifelong resident of the Upper Valley and attended Enfield schools. He worked at the Baltic Mill in Enfield before entering the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Following discharge he returned to this area where he worked as a carpenter. He worked for several construction companies n the Upper Valley that were responsible for the Interstate 89 bridge construction.

He was a member of the Lebanon Lodge of Elks and loved farming, animals, gardening, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and the outdoors.

He is survived by a son Daniel Leslie Quimby of Canaan, a loyal friend Steven Arnold of Canaan, 3 brothers; Edward of SC, Charles of CA, Leonard of Concord, NH, 4 sisters; Gladys Quimby, Doris Verge, Alice Chadbourne, all of Lebanon, and Betty Busbee of St. Albans, VT, many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother Arthur Quimby.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home on School St. in Lebanon on Sunday evening from 7-9 pm. Funeral service were held on Monday afternoon at 2:00 at the United Methodist Church in Enfield with the Rev. Virginia Fryer officiating. Burial will be a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield.

George W. Morse

Canaan, NH–George W. Morse, 81, died Tuesday September 11, 2001 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in White River Jct., VT following a long illness. He was born in Andover, MA October 12, 1919, a son of the late Harry L. & Ruby (Colbuni) Morse. A lifelong resident of Canaan, NH he was a graduate of Canaan High School – Class of 1937. He served 26 years in the United States Air Force. During WWII he served as a B-17 bomber pilot in the European Theatre where he was shot down and became a Prisoner of War in Germany until being liberated at the end of the war. He later was employed as an EPO Mail Carrier in Canaan for 15 years. Following his retirement in 1988 he delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. George was a longtime member of the Canaan Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award. He was also a member of the American Legion Post of Canaan; had served for 2 terms on the Canaan Board of Selectmen; and enjoyed gardening.

He leaves his wife Irene J. (Roullier) Morse of Canaan whom he married in 1963; and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by a brother Richard Morse and a sister Katherine Follansbee.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside Committal Services will be held Saturday Sept. 22nd at 11 a.m. at the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH. The Rev. Gail Dimick will officiate along with members of the American Legion Post of Canaan.

Thomas O. Ireton

Canaan, NH–Thomas G. Ireton, 72, of Canaan died on Wednesday evening at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. He was born in New York, NY on April 21, 1929 a son of John and Caroline (Brinkmann) Ireton. He came to Canaan at the age of 2 where he grew up and attended schools. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1947 during WWII and remained with the Air Force until his discharge in 1961 as a Staff Sergeant. Following discharge he moved to Fairfield, CA where he owned and operated automobile service stations and repair shops. In 1972 he moved back to Canaan and was married to Judy Arnold on Nov. 11, 1972. He has been self employed in this area operating Ireton Construction and Tom’s Used Cars in Canaan. He served as road agent and several terms as a selectman for the town of Canaan. He was a member of the Canaan arid Fairfield, CA Lions Clubs and held his private pilots license. While in California he flew with the Solano County Sheriff’s Department search and rescue air squadron. He enjoyed traveling, camping, town and national politics, and wintering in Inverness, FL.

He is survived by his wife Judy Ireton of Canaan, 2 sons Lanny Thomas Ireton of Benicia, CA, Terry Lynn Ireton of Vacaville, CA, a brother John Ireton of Canaan, a sister Louise Poell of Concord, NH, 3 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Canaan Methodist Church in Canaan. Phyllis C. Withington

Canaan, NH–Phyliss C. Withington, 75, of Canaan died suddenly on Monday, July 30, 2001 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. She was born in Orange, NH on June 29, 1926 the daughter of Pearl and Bertha (Grace) Cross. She was a lifelong resident of this area and was married to Robert H. Withington on June 29, 1953. Mrs. Withington had been employed at Dartmouth College for many years before her retirement in 1988. She enjoyed crafts work and camping with her family. She is survived by her husband of Canaan, two children-Diane Boisvert of Claremont and Douglas Withington of Canaan, three granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, two sisters-Dorothy Kendall of Canaan and Gloria Machon of Vicksburg, MS, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Ellen Gowing and a brother, George Cross.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield on Thursday evening from 7-9 pm. Funeral services were held at the Canaan United Methodist Church Friday at 11 am with the Rev. Patricia Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan.

Leslie Edward Rogers, Jr.

Canaan, NH–Leslie Edward Rogers, Jr., 64, died on Sunday April 16, 2000. He was born on November 12, 1935 in Bristol, PA to Leslie E. Rogers, Sr. and Marie (VanSoest) Rogers. He attended Bristol, PA schools and worked for 31 years as a postal service executive. He was employed by the Bristol, PA Post Office for many years and had served as Postmaster of the Ft. Washington, PA Post Office for 10 years. He and his wife of 46 years, Marion (Gorman) Rogers, retired to Canaan where Mr. Rogers worked at the Cardigan Mt. School in the athletic maintenance department.

He was predeceased by: Leslie E. Rogers, Sr., father and Marie Rogers, mother

He is survived by: Marion (Gorman) Rogers, wife, of Canaan; Stephen and Leslie III, sons, both of Canaan; Timothy, son, of Philadelphia, PA; Andrew, son, of Anderson, SC; Regina Wiseman, daughter, of Jersey Shore, PA; Jennifer Kahn, daughter, of Canaan; Judith Chaffee, sister, of Leavittown, PA; 17 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild
