Donald E. McAlister

Canaan, NH–Donald E. MacAlister, 72, died on early Friday morning, April 28, 2000 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare Center following a long illness. He was born in Canaan, NH on April 17, 1928 the son of Earl and Alice (Recard) McAlister. He was a lifelong resident of Canaan where he graduated from high school. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving both WWII and the Korean Conflict. In 1948 he was married to Rita Monroe and they have made their home in Canaan for the past 52 years. Mr. McAlister was employed for 32 years as a brakeman for Boston & Maine Railroad and retired in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion in Canaan and served the Town of Canaan on the Budget Committee for two terms. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting and gardening. and most of all loved his family.

He is survived by his wife Rita McAlister of Canaan, two sons Jack and David McAlister both of Canaan, a brother Gordon McAlister of Canaan, 2 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Monday evening at 7 pm at the Ricker Funeral Home on Rte. 4 in Enfield with the Pastor John Crilley officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Canaan Street Cemetery.

Christian McConnell McVey

Canaan, NH–Graveside Committal Services for Christian McConnell McVey, who died January 12, 2000 at the age of 91, will be held Monday April 24 at 1 pm in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH. The Rev. Patricia Williams will officiate. The Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon is in charge of arrangements.

Robert “Brian” Williams

Canaan, NH–Robert “Brian” Williams, 42, died on Sunday March 19, 2000 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born on May 8, 1957, in Proctor, VT, the son of William H. and Laura (Migliavacca) Williams. He attended East Montpelier schools and Johnson State College. He came to the Upper Valley in 1981 and had been employed as an orderly at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He then married Doris A. Chouinard on October 1, 1983. In 1996 he went to work for the United States Postal Service first in White River Jct., VT and for the last few years as the Postal Clerk in the Enfield, NH Post Office. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and New York sports fan.

Friends were able to call on Tuesday night, March 21 at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral Services were conducted on Wednesday morning at 11 am in the funeral home with Rev. Roland Nadeau M.S. officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, NH.

The family suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Robert Brian Williams Fund, c/o Mascoma Saving Bank, PO Box 435, Lebanon, NH 03766 to benefit his children’s education.

Predeceased by: William Harry Williams, father.

Survived by: Laura (Migliavacca) Williams, mother; Doris A. Williams, wife, Canaan, NH; Eric C. and Matthew B. Williams, sons, Canaan, NH; Stephanie M. Williams, daughter, Canaan, NH; Willian H., III of NY and Dana Williams of ME, half brothers. Several close friends, in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Walter Hazelton

Canaan, NH–Walter Hazelton, Jr., 68, died Tuesday April 4, 2000 at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH, He was born in Orange, NH on April 28, 1931, a son of Walter & Frances (Wiley) Hazelton, Sr. and attended local schools. A lifelong area resident, he had worked for Split Ballbearing; and retired in 1993 as custodian at Mascoma Valley Regional High School. He will be remembered for his gardens and love of animals. He was married Dec. 2, 1966 to Ethel (Black).

There will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice.

He was predeceased by: Walter Hazelton, Sr., father.

He is survived by: Frances Miller, mother, of Dorchester, NH; Ethel Hazelton, wife, of Canaan, NH; Walter F. Hazelton, son, of Grafton, NH; Daniel M. Hazelton, son, of Orange, NH; Jane Valia, daughter, of Lebanon, NH; Linda Landry, sister, of Dorchester, NH; 4 grandchildren, 1 nephew and several cousins.

Leslie Paul Mansur

Canaan, NH–Leslie Paul Mansur, 73, of Canaan died on Wednesday at the Veterans Administrative Hospital in White River Jct. He was born in Lawrence, MA on October, 29, 1927 a son of John & Agnes (Rugh) Mansur. He attended schools in Bristol, NH and had been a resident of Canaan most of his life. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII. Prior to retirement he had been employed for many years with the State of New Hampshire as a bridge repairman. He was a member of the Foreign Wars in White River Jct., the American Legion in Canaan and served on the Town Budget Committee and was currently serving on the Planning Board. He also served the town of Canaan as a Volunteer Firefighter for over 20 years retiring as a Captain. Mr. Mansur was a State of New Hampshire Forest Fire Warden. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trips to his family’s camp in Errol, auto racing, watching his grandsons play baseball and was an avid Mascoma Royals fan. He had also worked as a volunteer at the Canaan Speedway Racetrack and the Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT.

He is survived by two children, Duane W. Mansur of Canaan and Kathie P. Towery of Canaan. Two grandsons, Leslie Paul Mansur and Keith Allen Mansur. A great-granddaughter, Raleigh May Mansur, a brother, Arthur J. Mansur, Sr. of Methuen, MA and a sister, Peggy Woodward of MA, plus many nieces and nephews.

Parents called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Sunday evening from 5-7 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the St. Mary’s Church in Canaan on Monday at 11:00 am with the Rev. Paul Rainville, M.S. officiating. Burial will be later in the spring.

Lettie E. Barbour

Canaan, NH–Lettie Barbour, died in the Mt. Ascutney Hospital on March 1. She was born on August 5, 1915 in West Canaan. She was the daughter of Truman and Lottie (Austin) Clark. She attended schools in West Canaan and Canaan. Also attended Wilfred Academy of Cosmetology in Boston, MA.

She married Harold Barbour on August 27, 1948 in Grace Chapel on Goose Pond Rd. They lived their married life in Hartland, VT. She volunteered helping with church and fire dept. suppers.

She was a member of the Darn It Woman’s Club, Emblem Club, and American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing bingo. Many tiny hats were knitted by her for premature babies.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1986 also, John, Theodore, Horace, Raymond, Elwin, Clayton and Calvin – her seven brothers. Three sisters; Gertrude, Rena and Arleen..

She is survived by her sister Gladys Chesser of Morriston, FL and Grace Reney of Enfield. And many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service was conducted at the Congregational Church in Hartland on March 6 by Rev. Robert Moyer. Donations may be made in her memory to the Hartland Memorial Library, for Children’s Books, PO Box 137, Hartland, VT 05048.

Majorie L. Hines

Canaan, NH–Marjorie L. Hines, 75, died at her home Sunday morning Sunday morning April 15, 2001. She was born in Plainfield, NH March 7, 1926, a daughter of the late Doris L. (Hazelton) and Fred O. Stearns Sr. A resident of the Upper Valley all her life, she was married to Roger Hines in 1946. They made their home in Canaan. Mr. Hines died in 1999. Majorie was employed for 30 years at Split Ballbearing as a supervisor in the white room. She enjoyed knitting, feeding birds, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters: Gail Moffat and Patricia Eastman, both of Canaan, NH; three brothers: Fred Stearns Jr. of Orford, NH, Eli Stearns of Fairlee, VT, and Paul Stearns of Grantham, NH; four sisters: Madeline McGonis, Maxine Preston and Jean Arsenault, all of Lebanon, NH and Beverly Elliot of Marlow, NH; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Hines, in 1999; also four brothers: Raymond, Ralph R., Reginal and Robert; and two sisters: Ruth Auclair and Bernita Plume.

There were no calling hours. Graveside committal services will be held at a later date in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan, NH. The Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon was in charge of arrangements.

Burton G. Curry

Canaan, NH–Burton G. Curry, 100, a long-time resident of West Canaan, NH passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2000 in Deland, FL.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth T. Curry, two daughters, Margaret E. Hobbs of Hamden, CT and Mary K. Marshall of Deland, FL. Numerous grand, great grands and great great grandchildren.

Dorothy Curry Miller, 80, hid eldest daughter, preceded him in death on December 1, 2000 in Deland, FL.

Leon Tadeusz Kremzner

Canaan, NH–Leon Tadeusz “Lee” Kremzner, 75, died unexpectedly Tuesday January 18, 2000 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

A respected scientist who moved to Canaan in 1983, Mr. Kremzner, at the time of his death, was serving as a selectman.

He was born September 16, 1924, in Wyszkow, Poland, as an American citizen born abroad, and came to the United States in 1930. He attended schools in Newark, NJ and left Newark College of Engineering to serve in the Army during WWII. He was a Corporal in the Anti-Tank Company 406th Infantry Regiment, part of the 102nd Infantry, and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Mr. Kremzner received several medals, including the Bronze Star.

He graduated from Seton Hall College in 1949 and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Rutgers University in 1955. He did postdoctoral work at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.

On August 26, 1956 he was married to Louise M. Roik. They lived in several New Jersey communities, including Upper Saddle River, Pennington, Ho-Ho-Kus and Chester. Mr. Kremzner was an associate professor of neurochemistry and a senior research scientist at Columbia University. For more than 30 years, he taught and conducted research on Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and nerve regeneration. He is credited with developing a method for isolating acetylcholinesterase. He published more than 50 papers and held 4 patents. Mr. Kremzner served as an advisor to the U.S. Army Medical Research Laboratories and to the National Science Foundation. He retired in 1986.

Mr. and Mrs. Kremzner moved to Canaan in 1983. They ran the Inn on Canaan Street, which was selected by Yankee Magazine in 1995-96 as one of the best places to stay in New England. Mr. Kremzner was active in town affairs and was elected selectman in 1998. He loved the town and worked many hours to make it a better place.

Mr. Kremzner loved the outdoors and was extremely active. He was usually one of the first to swim at Canaan Street Lake in the spring and one of the last in the fall. He loved to skate, ski and take walks with his dogs, which he adored. He enjoyed spirited conversations with friends and family around the dinner table. He believed that his proudest accomplishment was his family and his greatest joy was bringing up his children.

Survivors include his wife of Canaan; his son, Mark, of Vancouver and ME; a daughter, Madeline Olsen of Post Mills and son, Stuart of Bloomington, IL; son, Raymond of MD, from a previous marriage; two brothers, Stanislaw of Vacaville, CA and Sigmunt of Pawley’s Island, SC; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday at 1:30 pm at the Cardigan Mountain School Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982 or to the Canaan FAST Squad, Canaan, NH 03741. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover.

Dennis Paul Edgecomb

Canaan, NH–Dennis Paul Edgcomb, 43, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 1, 2000 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Lowell, MA January 24, 1957, a son of Robert & Priscilla (Carter) Edgecomb. He attended schools in Tewksbury, MA graduating from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1976. He was employed by Split Ballbearing (now known as Timken Aerospace) in Lebanon, NH for 17 years. He loved horses and owned and operated Broken Branch Stables in Canaan, NH. He was a member of the American Legion where he leaves many friends. Friends were able to call at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St. in Lebanon, NH Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. Services followed at 8 pm in the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held in Tewksbury, MA to be announced at a later date.
