Canaan, NH–George Howard Burton Jr., 69, died at his home Thursday, August 10, 1995 following a long illness. He was born in Pine Plains, NY Feb. 23, 1926, the son of the late George H. & Elna Mary (Roberts) Burton Sr. He attended schools in Hawley, PA and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII. He had lived in the Lebanon/Canaan area since 1971 and had been employed as a brick mason and later worked at Split Ballbearing for 11 years. Following his retirement from Split Ballbearing, he worked in maintenance at the Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan.
He loved tending to his garden, and fishing with his wife, the former Jeanne (Fournier) Spencer whom he married Oct. 9, 1971.
There were no calling hours. A Memorial Service was conducted Monday morning at 10 a.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield with the Rev. Paul Rainville M.S. officiating.
The family requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to The Norris Cotton Cancer, DHMC, 1 Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, NH 03756 or to the Mascoma Senior Center, PO Box 210, Canaan, NH 03741.
Survivors include: his wife, Jeanne (Fournier) Burton of Canaan; a daughter, Judy Hegwood of Atlanta, GA; a son, Jerry Burton of Ft. Worth TX; a daughter, Mary Turner of Jacksonville, FL; a daughter, Martha White of Gainsville, FL; a son, George H. Burton III of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a step-son, Lionel A. Spencer of Claremont, NH; a step-son, Christopher Spencer of Lebanon; a step-son, Timothy Spencer of Canaan, NH; a brother, Frank Burton of West Milford, NJ; a sister, Jackie Liverman of Portsmouth, VA; a sister, Cindy Ashburn of Wappingers Falls, NY; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
