Enfield, NH–Lena (Sanborn) Avery, 81, died June 6 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from respiratory and kidney failure. She was born in Sunapee, NH on August 25, 1914, the daughter of Alton and Helen (Leavitt) Sanborn. She was married to Frederick C. Avery who died in 1973. Her early married years were spent raising a family and working as a farmer in the Sunapee area. After moving to the Enfield area in 1942 she was employed at the A.G. Dewey or Baltic Mill for 28 years as a spinner. Most recently she was employed by Dartmouth College until retirement in 1979. Her retirement years were spent enjoying her family, baking for the Lioness Club events, and creating beautiful gardens around her home. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 9, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Community Lutheran Church in Enfield. Burial followed on Monday in the Eastman Cemetery in Sunapee.
Survivors include: a son, William Avery of Enfield; a son, Arnold Avery of Standish, ME; a daughter, Dorothea Leonard of Rutland, VT; a daughter, Shirley Barnett of Swampscott, MA; a daughter, Theresa Hill of Enfield; a brother Lawrence Sanborn of Wendall, NH; a brother, Howard Sanborn of Newport, NH; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
