Canaan, NH-Frieda Mae Clifford, 89, died Saturday, November 14, 1998 in West Canaan.
She was born in Enfield on Sept. 28, 1909, a daughter of Frank and Stella (Bouck) Leach. She attended school in Lockehaven in the one room schoolhouse and later graduated from Lebanon High School. She was a resident of Enfield and Canaan all her life.
She was married to Charles L. Clifford on Dec. 18, 1931. They purchased the Woodlawn Farm on South Rd in West Canaan, which they operated as a vegetable farm, and delivered fresh vegetables throughout the area for 54 years. Following Mr. Clifford’s death on July 5, 1993, Mrs. Clifford continued to garden and can vegetables.
Mrs. Clifford was a member of the United Methodist Church in Enfield and the former Wayside Chapel in West Canaan, and was a member of the farm bureau. Her life was devoted to bringing up her large family on the farm, cooking, canning and freezing vegetables.
She also was predeceased by a sister, Alice Neily.
Survivors include five sons, Robert L. Clifford of Rutland, MA, James R. Clifford of W. Canaan, Donald E. Clifford of Newport, NH, David F. Clifford of Cornish and Thomas P. Clifford of Lebanon; three daughters, Louise A. Clifford of W. Canaan, Gail E. Lemere of Allen, TX, and Nancy D. LaCourse of W. Thornton, NH; two sisters, Doris Buzzell and Verna Dunn, both of W. Canaan; 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon.
