George Herbert Carr Sr.

Canaan, NH–George Herbert Carr Sr., 69, died at his home in Canaan on Tuesday morning, Jan. 21, 1997 following a long illness. He was born in Hanover, NH May 30, 1933 the son of the late Harry D. and Alice I. (Marshall) Carr. A life-long resident of the Hanover/Canaan area, he had worked in construction for various area contractors for many years. He was married to Joyce (Dolloph) on June 14, 1952. He enjoyed animals, gardening, and especially his grandchildren.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St. in Lebanon Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Cecilia Engelhardt officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Grafton, NH. The family requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to: The Canaan F.A.S.T. Squad, Canaan, NH 03741.

Survivors include: his wife, Joyce (Dolloph) Carr of Canaan; a son, George H. Carr Jr. of Canaan; a son, Mark A. Carr of Canaan; a daughter, Nora Boisvert of Grafton; a daughter, Terry Sturtevant of Canaan; a daughter, Sherry Penn of Canaan; a sister, Frances Carr of Hanover; a sister, Edith (Helen) Carr of Smithfield, NC; a brother, (name omitted from article). Geraldine Rita “Dolly” Ireton

Canaan, NH–Geraldine R. Ireton, 69, died at her home Wednesday morning, January 22, 1997 following a long illness. She was born in Lebanon, NH Oct. 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Harold & Blanche (Kimball) Roy. She attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident. For many years she had been employed by various area restaurants. She was also a transportation dispatcher for the Lebanon Senior Center. A favorite hobby was collecting knickknacks that she would find at flea markets and yard sales.

There were no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to: The Lebanon Senior Center, 10 Campbell St., Lebanon, NH 03766.

Survivors include: her husband, John J. Ireton of Canaan; a sister, Mabel Griggs of Lebanon, NH. She was preceded in death by a sister, Roxie, and a brother, Clayton. The Ricker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Harriet F. Welch

Canaan, NH–Harriet Foster Welch, 84, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1997 at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Newport, VT June 29, 1912 the daughter of the late Walter A. and Bertha (Aldrich) Dane. She attended schools in Newton Center, MA and was a graduate of Smith College with a degree in French literature. An accomplished musician and dancer, she taught ballet and tap dance in the Boston area. During WWII she served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the China/Burma Theatre as a Staff Asst. for the American Red Cross in India. Her home on Canaan Street was the setting for annual summer shows featuring her family as instructors and musicians and including a wealth of locally recruited talent. Harriet was married to Austin H. Welch, a former Professor at Dartmouth Hitchcock College, The University of New Hampshire, and the First President of the former Canaan College. Mr. Welch died in 1983.

She is survived locally by her dear friend and caretaker Velma Adams of Canaan, NH.

Harriet was preceded by her parents; and 2 sisters: Barbara and Helen Dane. There are no known surviving family members.

Robert E. Lawson, Sr.

Canaan, NH–Robert Edward Lawson, Sr., 51, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997 at his home following a long illness. He was born in Laconia, NH Sept. 13, 1945, the son of Kenneth and Viola (Bragg) Hooker Sr. He attended schools in Epsom, Canaan, and was a graduate of Lebanon High School – Class of 1964. He had been employed by NYNEX in Lebanon as a mechanic for 25 years. He was a member of the Lebanon Lodge of Elks, and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #2320 of Manchester. He enjoyed working out in the gym and flower gardening. Robert C. Eastman

Canaan, NH–Robert C. Eastman, 59, suddenly passed away on April 17, 1997 from a heart attack at DHMC in Lebanon, NH. The son of Clarence and Majorie (Pierce) Eastman, he was born September 22, 1937 in Orange, NH. He was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Canaan High School. Following graduation he was married to Patricia Bean in July of 1960. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1966. He had worked for Verham News Corp. in West Lebanon for 25 years before becoming employed with the Dartmouth College Buildings & Grounds Dept. for the past 15 years. He was active with the Royal Ranger program in the Assembly of God Church in Canaan and served as head usher and treasurer of the Sunday School. He was an avid hunter and fisherman but his main interest in life was spending time with his family.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Canaan Assembly of God church with the Rev. Dr. David E. Baker officiating. Burial followed in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Canaan Christian School, c/o Canaan Assembly of God Church, PO Box 265, Canaan, NH 03741.

C. Dana Christy

Canaan, NH–C. Dana Christy, 84, died Wednesday, December 3, 1997 at his home in West Canaan, NH. He was born in Westerly, RI July 1, 1913, the son of the late Bernard J. & Jessie (Smith) Christy. He was a grduate of Westerly High School-Class of 1931, and had played Semi-Pro Baseball for th Westerly Hilltoppers. He had been employeed by NEES for 44 years working in CT, RI, and MA and retiring from Granite State Electric in 1978. He had served in the NH Legislature for 14 years where he was a member and Vice Chairman of the Small Business and Consumer Affairs Committee. Mr. Christy was a WWII Veteran of the U.S.Navy and had served in the Pacific onboard the USS Palawan- one of the first ships to enter Sasebo Bay at the time of the Japenese surrender. He was active as a 4-H Leader over 40 years where he was a past President of the 4-H Foundation of NH; was on the State International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE); was a past President of the 4-H Leaders Assoc.; and received the 1973 National 4-H Citation for Volunteer Service to Community, County, State and Nation. A resident of Canaan, NH since 1950, Mr. Christy was a charter member of the Canaan Lions Club; a 50 year Mason and member of the Social Summit Lodge #56 of Canaan; and a member of the American Legion Guyer-Carigan Post #22 of Lebanon, NH. He attended the First Congregational Church of Lebanon where he was a member of the Christian Board of Education and was a Sunday school teacher for 10 years. He was married to his wife of 58 years, Esther (Hamilton) on October 21, 1939.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St., Lebanon, NH Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Lebanon, NH. The Rev. Richard N. Slater officiated. Burial will be in the spring in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Clinton, MA. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Christy may be made to The NH 4-H Foundation, Moiles House, University of NH, Durham, NH 03824.

Louise Irish Tobyne

Canaan, NH–Louise Irish Tobyne, 73, died peacefully on November 15, 1997, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

She was born on August 17, 1924, in Wolfeboro, the dauhter of Col. Robert Jasper and Miriam (Furber) Irish.

She was raised in Wolfeboro and had spent 35 years as a resident of Meredith before moving back to Wolfeboro in 1992. She was a graduate of Brewster Academy and an amunma of the University of NH. She had worked as a secretary for various businesses and was formerly employed by Annalee Dolls.

She was a member of the Meredith Congregational Church. She was a past matron of Ellacoya Chapter 43, O.E.S., Meredith, and a former member of the Warren Chapter 20, O.E.S., Wolfeboro. She had also been a member of the Phi Mu Sorority of UNH and a member of the Winnipesaukee Chapter of D.A.R. She had served on the Meredith Bicentennial Committee and was a member of the Wolfeboro Historical Society.

She was a World War II Army Veteran, having served in the Pentagon.

She had been living in Canaan with her daughter’s family, Chris and John Dow, and with her son’s family David and Sylvia Detcher of Meredith for the past four months.

Family members include her husband Max H. Tobyne of Leeds, MA; two sons, David E. Detscher of Meredith, NH, and Dwight I. Detscher of Las Vegas, NV; two daughters, Chris D. Dow of Canaan and Lynn D. Boyle of Centreville, VA; eight grandchildren, a great-grandchild, Madison C. Dow, who was one of Louise’s family members with whom she joyfully spent her last evening; a brother, Dr. Edwin F. Irish of Germantown, MD; two sisters, Catherine I. Dillon of Lewiston, ID and Janet I. Noland of Meredith.

Calling hours were held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, Meredith. Funeral services were held in the Meredith Congregational Church on Wednesday, November 19th, at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. James Bolin officiated. A spring burial will be held at Lakeview Cemetery, Wolfeboro. Memorial donations may be made to the Wolfeboro Historical Society, Box 106C, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Wayne H. Barton, Sr.

Canaan, NH–Wayne H. Barton, Sr., 56, died Tuesday morning following a long illness. He was born in Newport, NH February 15, 1941, the son of Harold and Ruth (Beals) Barton. He grew up in Grantham, NH and had lived in Canaan, NH for the last 16 years. He had been employed by Evans Expressmart as a tractor-trailer driver for several years. A CB radio enthusiast, his handle was “Uncle Popeye.” He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include: wife, Carol J. (Sturtevant) Barton of Canaan; mother, Ruth Douglas of Canaan; sons, Wayne Barton, Jr., of Campton and Michael John Barton of Dorchester; three brothers, Charles E. Barton of TX, Leavitt J. Barton of Campton and Gene A. Barton of Springfield; a sister, Geraldine M. Cote of Franklin; four grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his father, Harold Barton.

Harold K. “Homer” Neily

Canaan, NH–Harold K. Neily, 61, died Friday, May 22, 1998 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Canaan, NH on January 24, 1937, the son of the late Wesley and Coletta (Beaton) Neily. A lifelong Canaan resident, he was a graduate of Canaan High School Class of 1955. He had been employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Windsor, VT for over 25 years, retiring at the time of its closing in 1987. He was an avid reader and baseball fan, and enjoyed crossword puzzles. He dearly loved his children and his grandchildren. He was married to Joanne Allen on October 12, 1963.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home, Route 4 in Enfield, NH, Wednesday May 27, at 1:00 pm. Funeral services will follow at 2 pm in the funeral home with the Rev. Kevin Schwamb officiating. Burial will follow in the Canaan Street Cemetery.

She loved camping and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Canaan Grange, The Franklin V.F.W., Women’s Auxiliary #1698, and the Sunshine Chapter of the Good Sam Camping Club of Newport. Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home on School Street in Lebanon on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral services were held at the funeral home in Lebanon on Saturday at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Patricia Williams officiating. Following cremation, burial will be at a later date in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan.
