Mildred Dorothy Bailey Baker

Enfield, NH–Mildred Dorothy Bailey Barker, 86, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997 at the Alice Peck Day Extended Care Facility in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Canaan, NH Oct. 15, 1911, the daughter of the late Alvy E. & Lena Rose (Bill) Wheeler, and attended Canaan schools. She had been employed by the former Sharkey’s Bakery of Lebanon; the Baltic Woolen Mills of Enfield; as a cook in the hot lunch program of the Enfield school system; and was bookkeeper for her first husband’s business, the former May Street Garage in Enfield. She was a wonderful cook and baker and was well known for the meals she prepared and the baked goods and wedding cakes she made and decorated for many family members and friends. Mildred was a 50 year member of the Rebekah’s of Enfield, and a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was married to Clarence W. Bailey Sr., who died in 1987. She later married Roy “Skip” Barker on Jan. 6, 1990.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield on Sunday evening from 7-9 pm. Funeral services were conducted on Monday at 11 am in the Enfield United Methodist Church. The Rev. Patricia Williams officiated. Burial will be in the spring in the Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield, NH.

Survivors include: her husband, Roy “Skip” Barker of Enfield; a daughter, Dorothy M. Stark of Enfield; a son, James E. Bailey of Greenfield, MA; a step-son, Fred F. Barker of Enfield; a step-daughter, Joyce Noyes of Littleton, NH; a brother, Donald Wheeler of Enfield; a brother, Wilfred Wheeler of Enfield; a brother, Richard Wheeler of Enfield; a brother, Daniel Wheeler of Rockville, CT; a sister, Rena Smardon of Newport, NH; a sister, Marion Ibey of Enfield; a sister, Madeline Evans of Arizona; a sister, Eleanor Cantlin of Enfield; a sister, Arlene Evans of AZ; eight grand and three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grand and one step-great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Clarence W. Bailey Sr. in 1987; a son, Clarence W. Bailey Jr. in 1990; a brother, Eugene Wheeler; a brother, Clifton Wheeler; a brother, Bertrum Wheeler; and a sister, Evelyn Charbono.

David Winston Walker

Enfield, NH–David WinstonWalker, 88, died Saturday evening at the Woodlawn Nursing Home in Newport, NH. He was born in Worcester, MA Jan. 21, 1909 the son of David K. and Minnie (Fletcher) Walker.

Survivors include: wife, Eunice Walker of Enfield; son, William Walker of Claremont; and two grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He spent most of his life in the Mascoma-Enfield area. He attended schools in Mascoma and Lebanon. He was a peace time veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Walker was employed by the Baltic Woolen Mill in Enfield as an engineer and fireman and had worked in the Lebanon Woolen Mill. He was married for 52 years to Eunice Sargent and they made their home in Enfield center. He had also farmed in this area for many years and had been a cattle dealer. He was a past member of the Enfield Budget Committee and the Odd Fellows. He was a member of Mont Calm grange #70 and served as gate keeper for several years.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at the Union Church in Enfield center with the Rev. Stephen Prickett officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Mascoma Cemetery. Romeo Denis

Enfield, NH–Romeo Denis, 92, died Thursday evening February 4, 1999 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare in Hanover, NH. He was born in Canada July 8, 1906, the son of the late Philippe & Mary Louise Denis. He was a lifelong resident of the Upper Valley and along with his wife Rose had been the owner/operators of the Mt. Calm Inn of Enfield for many years.

At his own request there will be no services. Private burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lebanon, NH.

Donald E. Davis

Enfield, NH–Donald E. Davis, 64, died Thursday, February 11th, at his home in Enfield.

He was born November 28, 1934, in Alexandria, NH son of Richard G. Davis and Ida M. Baxter, attended Upper Valley schools , and was employed at James C. Campion & Sons in Hanover for 20 years.

On October 24, 1970, he was married to Catherine Hibbard. In 1980, they opened Cathi & Don’s Country Store in Enfield, which he was still operating at the time of his death.

Mr. Davis loved dogs, feeding birds and deer, collecting coins and classic cars, and most of all, spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Enfield; four sons, Keven M. and Donald E. Jr., both of Enfield, Michael K. and Anthony C. both of Canaan, a daughter, Pamela L. Nadeau of Canaan; a brother, Richard Davis of Lebanon; three sisters, Dorothy D. Harten of Springfield, VT, Maryann Stone of Shamokin, PA, and Cindy E. Eames of Wilder; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Monday from 7-9 pm at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 am at La Salette Shrine Chapel in Enfield. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield in the spring.

Vera A. Olsen

Enfield, NH–Vera A. Olsen, 82, died Saturday Oct. 24, 1998 at the Lebanon Center of Genesis Elder Care in Lebanon, NH She was born in Canaan, NH Sept. 25, 1916, the daughter of Solon B. and Elize (Johnston) Hardy and was a lifelong area resident. She attended Enfield High School and later Lebanon College. She was a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church, and was a president of the United Methodist women for over 10 years. She had been employed by the Baltic Mills for 12 years. She had been a substitute teacher in the Enfield school system for over 20 years teaching kindergarten and grade levels 2, 3 & 4 prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Relham chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Enfield, and was past Noble Grand of the Mt. Lebanon Rebekah lodge. Vera was pre-deceased by her first husband Archie “Tom” Sawyer. She was married on December 20, 1963 to Sten O. Olson in Enfield, NH.

She was an accomplished artist of early-American style painting and stenciling. She also enjoyed making original decorations and dried or pressed flower arrangements and notepapers.

There were no calling hours. A memorial service was held Tuesday morning at 11 am in the Enfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Williams officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, NH.

The family includes her husband, Sten O. Olson of Enfield, two stepsons , Robert Olson of Leadville, CO and Bruce Olson of White River Jct., VT. A sister, Verna Shurtleff, of KS, two grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Olson was pre-deceased by a brother, Clyde Hardy and her first husband Archie “Tom” Sawyer.

Jean C. LaPlante

Enfield, NH–Jean C. LaPlante, 73, died Sunday at her daughter’s home, where she had lived for the past 12 years, following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Claremont, a daughter of Alexander and Rosanna (Dansereau) LeClair. Mrs. LaPlante lived most of her life in Claremont, where she graduated from Stevens High School in 1942.

She was employed by Paine Webber, in Boston, before her marriage on June 19, 1948, to Leo R. LaPlante. Mr. LaPlante died Aug. 20, 1975.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Croteau of Enfield; two sons, Donald LaPlante of Lancaster, NH and Dennis LaPlante of Claremont; two brothers, Alexander LaClair of Newbury, NH, and Richard LaClair of North Hampton, NH; two sisters, Carolyn Sheehan of Sun City, FL, and Eleanor Jone of Claremont; 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 am at St. Mary’s Church in Claremont, with the Rev. Maurice LaRochelle, a family friend and pastor of All Saints Parish in Lancaster, NH, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Robert Larimore Clausen

Enfield, NH–Robert Larimore “Gramps” Clausen, 69, died Monday Jan. 20, 1997 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare Center in Hanover, NH following a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY May 21, 1927 the son of Olga & Henry Clausen. He served during the Korean Conflict in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1953. After serving his country he came back home where he became an avid member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brooklyn, NY. He was employed by Holmes Protective Inc. in New York City, where he retired after 27 years. Upon retiring from Holmes in 1982, he moved to his Enfield summer home which he loved so much. He frequently referred to his home in Enfield as “God’s Country.” He was employed by the Grand Union Supermarket in Hanover for 10 years and was a school custodian at the Indian River School for five years.

Private services will be held at he convenience of the family.

Survivors include: his wife, Joan E. (Johnson) Clausen of Enfield; a daughter, Karen Sanborn of Enfield; a son, Clifford Clausen of New York; four grandchildren-Keith & Jodi Sanborn, Nancy & Christopher Teehan.

Warren Douglas Proctor

Enfield, NH–Warren Douglas Proctor, 86, died Monday morning, Feb. 10, 1997 at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Freemont, NH April 26, 1910, the son of the late Percy and Jennie (Brooks) Proctor. He attended schools in Freemont, later graduated from Manchester, NH Central High School, and attended the University of New Hampshire. He had been employed by Cote Buick in Derry, NH from 1934-1942. Mr. Proctor was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and served from 1942-1946. He was involved in various battle including the Battle of the Bulge, and received a Purple Heart. The Government of Belgium nominated Warren as a Fellow in the Court of Leopold II, and award him with the Croix de Guerre with Palm for bravery and wounds received in the liberation of Belgium. Following his discharge he worked as a salesman until 1950 when along with his wife Dorothy, operated the Proctor’s General Store in Enfield Center until it was sold to his son in 1979.

Mr. Proctor was a longtime member and had served as trustee at the Enfield Center Union Church. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason; and was a member of the V.F.W. in White River Jct.,VT.

There were no calling hours. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in the Enfield Center Union Church. Burial will be in the spring in the Mt. Calm Cemetery in Enfield Center.

Roger C. Foster

Enfield, NH–Roger C. Foster, 88, died Wednesday April 2, 1997 at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Enfield, NH Oct. 28, 1908, the son of the late Walter & Annie (Clough) Foster. A lifelong Enfield resident he attended local schools. He had worked on the family farm for years helping to raise cattle and poultry. He loved the out-of-doors and for most of his life he was a self-employed woodsman. Well known throughout the area for his generosity, he could often be found doing errands for many area residents. He enjoyed visiting his friends and neighbors, and caring for his many cats.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held in the spring in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon.

Survivors include: a niece, Harriet Stevens of Canaan, NH; a niece, Eleanor Anderson of Canaan, NH; a nephew, Harry Foster of West Willington, CT. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Foster and a nephew, Eugene Foster.

Sarah Elizabeth Nylund

Enfield, NH–Sarah Elizabeth Nylund, 13, died suddenly Friday, May 9, 1997 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Lebanon on Feb. 25, 1984; the daughter of Thomas W. and Helen F. (Palmer) Nylund. A lifelong resident of Enfield, she attended the Enfield Village School and was a 7th grade student at the Indian River School in Canaan. She was an avid animal lover and inspired to become a veterinarian. She enjoyed spending time with her dog Lucy. Sarah loved swimming and rollerblading. She volunteered many hours helping her father at Enfield Lions Club activities. She was a dedicated Green Bay Packer fan. She loved life and family, and enjoyed the closeness of friends, especially her very best friend, Jaci.

Sarah was an accomplished water skier and was currently the NH State Champion for Girls Division IV. She was recently selected for the U.S. Junior Development Water Ski Team. She was a member of the NH Water Ski Assoc.; The American Water Ski Assoc.; and the Maine State Water Ski Federation.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St, Lebanon, NH on Tuesday evening, May 13th, from 6-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in the LaSalette Chapel on Route 4A in Enfield.
