William Henry Braley Jr.

Canaan, NH–William Henry Braley Jr., 91, died October 8, 1995 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.  The son of the late William Henry  Braley Sr. and Esterbelle Braley, he was born March 28, 1904 in Antrim, NH.  He attended Claremont schools and had been a resident of Canaan since 1947.  He was married to Dorothy Doris Hardy on Oct. 26, 1935.  They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary later this month.  He had been employed as a carpenter for many years at Trumbull-Nelson in Hanover, retiring from there in 1969.  He worked in this area on his own until fully retiring in 1979.  He enjoyed fishing and dancing.  He served Boy Scout Troop 319 in Canaan as an assistant Scout Master for several years.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield from 7-9 on Wednesday evening.  Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial following in the Canaan Street Cemetery.

Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Doris Braley of Canaan; a son, Charles William Braley of Honduras; a son, Herbert James Braley of Newport; a daughter,  Elizabeth Martha Kilton of Lebanon; a daughter, Arlene Grace Tingley of Plymouth; a daughter, Wilma Jean Drew of Bow, NH; a daughter, Colleen Diana Braley of Sunderland, MA; a son, Erwin Henry Braley of Canaan; a son, William Wayne Braley of Fayetteville, NC; a sister, Grace Goff of West Canaan; 29 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Belle Drew who died in 1962.

Gerard Joseph Dessert

Enfield, NH–Gerard Joseph Dessert, 35, died Sunday morning, Sept. 17, 1995 at his home following a long illness.  He was born in Woodsville, NH April 29, 1960, the son of Maurice & Barbara (Follansbee) Dessert.  He attended schools in Lebanon, and was a graduate of Mascoma Valley Regional High School–Class of 1979.  A lifelong area resident, he had been employed by Split Ballbearing for several years, and later worked for the City of Lebanon for many years.

Gerard enjoyed the outdoors, and loved camping, hiking, car rides in the mountains, and raising his own livestock.

He enjoyed spending time with his daughters and was an avid fan and spectator of their sports activities.  Family and friends will remember his wonderful sense of humor.

He was married to Doreen (Pollard) who died in 1987.

He married Robin E. (Wolfe) March 10, 1988.

Friends called at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m.  Funeral Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the funeral home.

Charles H. Lester

Canaan, NH–Charles H.  Lester, 81, died at his home in Canaan Sunday, July 21, 1996.  He was born in Weston, VT July 19, 1915 the son of the late Charles Felix & Flora Jane (Bolster) Lester and had been a resident of Canaan since 1945.  He retired as a salesman for Sanel Auto Paris.  He was an active member of the Canaan United Methodist Church.  In the last year he received his 50 year pin as a member of the Social Summit Lodge #50.  He loved guns and was a long time member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).  He was a strong supporter of the Mascoma Senior Center and their Meals On Wheels Program.

There were no calling hours.  A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Survivors include:  Sons:  Charles Russell Lester, Canaan, NH and Neal Dustin Lester, Concord, NH; a daughter, Sheryl Ann Austin, Canaan, NH; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Knuckey) Lester, who died in 1993.

Lois Butler Johnston

Enfield, NH–Lois Butler Johnston, 74, a longtime Mascoma resident, died Monday evening July 8, 1996 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon following a long illness.  She was born in Hanover, NH August 24, 1921, the daughter of George M.  & Florence (Potter) Butler Sr., and granddaughter of Lebanon’s A.J. & Florence Potter (past jeweler & optometrist from WWI through the 40’s).  Lois lived in Wallingford and New Milford, CT, and Boston, MA before residing in Pittsburg, PA.  She attended elementary school in Carrick, PA, graduated from high school in Brentwood, PA in 1939, and took courses in chemistry and Latin in 1940.  She entered nurses’s training in 1940 at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, NH and graduated with her Registered Nurse Degree in 1943.  She worked in the Operating Room as a scrub nurse and later as a supervisor in several private hospitals in Miami, FL from 1943-1950.  She was a labor and delivery room nurse for one year at Mt.  Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, FL from 1950-1951.

She was married to Leonard D.  Johnston on February 26, 1945 in Miami, FL and they returned to Mascoma in 1951 where she resided until her death.

After a 12 year respite from nursing she was employed by Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, NH for 23 years (1963-86), 5 years in pediatrics and 18 years in obstetrics.  She was an assistant Girl Scout leader in Lebanon, NH and a Camp Nurse at Camp Plymouth in Ludlow, VT during the 50’s.  She was a school nurse while her children were in school and was active in the PTA, Home-Room Mom, and volunteered at the Enfield School Library.  She loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, nature walks, climbing, hiking and camping.  She was an avid ornithologist, a member of the Audubon Society, and an official bird bander for the U.S. Bird Banding Laboratory from 1951-94.

She was a member of many organizations supporting nature, conservation, the environment, and Native American Indians.  She held many leadership positions throughout her life.  Lois was a longtime member of the Enfield United Methodist Church serving as it’s financial secretary, organist and choir director as long as she was able, and was an officer in the United Methodist Christian Women’s Organization.  Music was an integral part of her life and she had recently donated her personal electronic organ to the Wayside Chapel of the West Canaan United Methodist Church.  She also enjoyed making handcrafts and baking.

There were no calling hours.  Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield.  A celebration of Lois’ life was held Saturday afternoon July 13th at 2 p.m.  in the Mary Keene Chapel at LaSalette in Enfield, NH.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to:  The Enfield United Methodist Church, PO Box 453, Canaan, NH 03741 or The Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756.  Arrangements were under the direction of the Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon.

Survivors include:  her husband, Leonard D.  Johnston of Enfield; a son, Merrick Daniel Johnston of Enfield; a son, Scott Lee Johnston of Canaan; a daughter, Jacqui Lynne Begor of Canaan; a brother, George M.  Butler Jr.  of Enfield; a sister, Frances Ann Ruel of Livonia, MI; seven grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Ethel B. Sanville

West Lebanon, NH–Ethel Belle Sanville, 76, died Monday, August 5, 1996 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.  She was born in South Barnard, VT, November 7, 1919, the daughter of the late Alton & Etta (Minor) Badger and attended a local one-room-schoolhouse.  A resident of Lebanon and West Lebanon for most of her life, she was married to Edward H.  Sanville in 1946.  Mr.  Sanville died in 1964.  She was the proprietor of the former Dartmouth Variety Store in Lebanon for many years.  Ethel was a member of the Holy Redeemer Church of West Lebanon.  She had a green thumb and enjoyed plants and gardening, but her greatest love was of her children and family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Holy Redeemer Church of West Lebanon.  Burial followed in the Mt.  Calvary Cemetery in Lebanon, NH.

Survivors include: sons, Julian  A.  Badger Sr., Lebanon, NH, Alfred C.  Sanville, Ocala, FL, Raymond A.  Sanville, Plainfield, NH; daughters, Eva M.  Duff, Lebanon, NH, Violet J.  Lee, White River Jct., VT;  a stepson, Albert Sanville Sr., Grafton, NH; a stepdaughter, Helena Kelley, Enfield, NH; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H.  Sanville in 1964; stepsons, Joseph Sanville and Edward F.  Sanville.

Arrangements were made by Ricker Funeral Home.

Delbert Andrew Laliberte

Enfield, NH–Delbert Andrew Laliberte, 69, died Sunday, July 21, 1996 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.  He was born in Lebanon, NH July 31, 1926, the son of the late Elzephire & Evelina (Gauthier) Laliberte, he attended Lebanon schools, and had been an Upper Valley resident for most of his life.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater.  He had been employed by CRREL (Cold Regions Research and Experimental Laboratories) in Hanover, NH retiring in 1988.  Mr.  Laliberte was a member of the V.F.W. of West Lebanon and the American Legion of Lebanon.  He enjoyed fishing and woodworking and had exhibited his wood-works with the Lebanon Arts & Crafts Association.  He was married to Suzanne (Stuchal) on August 24, 1963.

Burial followed services in the Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield.

He was preceded in death by his sister Jeanne Bagloe.

David G. Fellows, Sr.

Enfield, NH–David George Fellows Sr., 60, died at hid home Wednesday morning, August 14, 1996 following a long illness.  He was born in Burlington, VT February 23, 1936 a son of the late Dean & Mary (Corrigan) Fellows.  He attended West Lebanon High School  and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1956.  He worked for Hathorne’s Part Co. in West Lebanon for many years.  In 1980 he opened his own business, D & S Auto Electric in Hartford, VT.  In 1992 he moved his business now known as Dave’s Starter & Alternator to Lebanon, NH where his son continues to operate the family business.  His first priority was his family.  He also enjoyed travel, gardening, and flying his Cessna Airplane.  He was married to “Midge” (Braley) Jan.  21, 1956.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m.  Funeral Services were held Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the Cardigan Mountain School Chapel in Canaan, NH.  Burial followed in the Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield, NH with Pastor David W.  Gray officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mascoma Home Health Care, PO Box 118, Canaan, NH 03741.

Survivors include:  his wife, Mabel I.  (Braley) Fellows of Enfield, NH; a son, David G.  Fellows, Jr.of West Canaan; a daughter, Ann Fellows-Coady of Quechee, VT; a daughter, Vicky McDaniel of Williamstown, VT; a daughter, Bonnie Colburn of Enfield; a daughter, Dorrie Fellows of Enfield and four grandchildren.

Herbert Britton King

Enfield, NH–Herbert Britton King, 88, died Monday July 22, 1996 at the Woodlawn Nursing Home in Newport, NH.  He was born in Waterford, CT June 7, 1908, the son of the late Dana & Addie (Britton) King and had lived most of his life in the Upper Valley.  He had worked at the Enfield Box Co.; The Baltic Mills of Enfield; and in his retirement drove a bus for the Lebanon Street School.  He thoroughly enjoyed people, fishing, playing cards, gardening and  camping.  He will be remembered in Enfield Center as selling his roadside veggies with his little white poodle “Scampy.”

Burial will be at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, NH.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to:  Mascoma Home Health Services, Main Street, Canaan, NH 03741 or to: The Enfield F.A.S.T. Squad, Enfield, NH 03748.

Survivors include;  Sons: Harry King, Newport, NH, Glen King, Enfield Center, NH, Richard King, Enfield, NH; Daughters:  Yvonne Pollard, Enfield, NH, Marie Bean, Enfield, NH; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 1 cousin and ! niece.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia M.  King, who died March 24, 1988; a daughter, Alice Louise King who died in infancy; and a sister, Gladys Goldenbaum who died in 1957.

Laura M. Sturtevant

Orange, NH–Laura M.  Sturtevant, 84, died Saturday morning, Sept.  14, 1996 at the home of her sister in Canaan, NH, following a brief illness.

She was born in Danbury, NH on May 26, 1912, the daughter of the late Robert & Ora (Tucker) Gallup.  She had been a lifelong resident of Orange and had attended the Canaan United Methodist Church.

There were no calling hours.  A graveside service was held on Sept.  17th in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan.  Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include:  Son, Warren Morrill, Orange; Step-son, Richard Morrill, OK; Sisters, Inez Laware, Canaan; Myrtle Cooper, and Carrie Williams, Grafton; Brother, Donald Gallup, Grafton; Several grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, many dear friends.

Preceded in death by:  Second husband, Lewis Sturtevant, died 1978; brother, Adeney Gallup.

Rosalind Helena MacDonald

Canaan, NH–Rosalind Helena MacDonald, 78, died Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical center in Lebanon, NH.  She was born in Holderness, NH, February 26, 1918, the daughter of the late Herman & Georgia (Tibbetts) Baker.  She came to Canaan, NH one year ago from the Bristol, NH area where she had been employed by the International Packing Corp. for 20 years retiring in 1975.  Mrs. MacDonald was a member of the Bristol Baptist Church.  The greatest joy in her life was her grandchildren.

There were no calling hours.  A memorial service was held on Friday a 2 p.m. at the Holderness Baptist Church.  The family requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon.

Survivors include:  a son, Ronald Baker of Salem, CT; a son, William MacDonald of Canaan; a daughter, Loraine Normandie of Canaan; a brother, Leslie Baker of Plymouth, NH; a sister, Carolyn Calley of Holderness, NH; a sister, Barbara Orbon of Miami, FL; a sister, Beverly Smith of Holderness, NH; a sister, Marylee Dumas of Randolph, VT; a sister, Norma Jean Baker of West Lebanon, NH; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
