Daniel Henry O’Day

Lantana, FL–Daniel Henry O’Day, age 68, died suddenly on January 29,1996 at his home in Lantana, FL.  A native of Enfield, NH, he graduated from Enfield High School in 1947.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army , serving during WWII.  Following discharge, he went to school to become a foreman in the area woolen mills, working in Lebanon, Enfield, and Bridgewater, VT, retiring in 1990, after 50 years of service.  He was married to Janet Dyba in 1950 and they made their home in Lebanon, Enfield, and Bridewater, VT.  They moved to Florida in 1990 following Mr.  O’Day’s retirement.  He was a member of the VFW in Lebanon and the Lebanon Elks Lodge.  His children remember him  as being a very loving, caring, wonderful father and devoted husband.

Survivors include:  Wife Janet O’Day, of Lantana, FL; daughters Peggy Vincent and Patricia Rollman of Enfield, NH; sons, Michael of Lebanon, NH, Henry of Lake Worth, FL and Kevin of Lantana, FL; a brother, Richard O’Day of Lantana, FL; 19 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, NH was in charge of the arrangements.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield.

Frank M. Austin

Dorchester, NH–Frank M.  Austin, 66, died Wednesday, Feb.  14, 1996 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Ctr. in Lebanon, NH following a long illness.  He was born in Grafton, NH Dec.  25, 1929, the son of the late Valentine M.  & Mabel L.  (Sargent) Austin.  An Upper Valley resident for all of his life, he was a self-employed building contractor for many years and assisted many area residents build homes or make repairs.  He had been employed as a maintenance foreman for International Packing Corp.  for several years.  He was later employed for many years as a master repairman for Cone Automatic (now known as Cone Blanchard) in Windsor, VT.  Mr.  Austin was a dowser and had successfully found over 200 wells without a single dry one.  He was a lifelong beekeeper and had used his bees in the treatment of his arthritis.  He loved hunting and had raised 27 champion coon-dogs.  He was an avid golfer and had shot a hole in one on Sept.  11, 1991 in Meredith, NH.  Frank attended the Canaan Assembly of God Church in Canaan, NH.  He will be remembered by many as a very giving person who would donate his time and his abilities in building construction to the benefit of those in need.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield on Friday evening from 7-9 p.m.  Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Canaan Assembly of God Church in Canaan, NH.  Burial will be in the spring in the Grafton Center Cemetery.

Survivors include:  his wife, Sylvia Mae (Young) Austin of Dorchester; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made for the purchase of choir robes to the Canaan Assembly of God Church, PO Box 265, Canaan, NH  03741.

 

Avis H. Laramie

Charlestown, NH–Mrs.  Avis H.  Laramie, 81, of 89 West Street, Charlestown, died Wednesday evening February 21, 1996 at the Valley Regional Hospital after a long illness.  She was born in Grafton, NH on June 10, 1914 the daughter of Guy C.  and Ethel P.  (Frazier) Haskins and had resided in Charlestown for fifty years and wintered in Vero Beach, FL for sixteen years.

She was a graduate of Keene Normal School and taught grammar school in West Canaan and Charlestown for a short time and also did private tutoring in Charlestown.  She worked at Jones & Lamson Machine in Springfield, VT for five years in the late forties as a key punch operator.  Mrs.  Laramie was a very active member of the Charlestown  Congregational Church having been instrumental in starting The Thrift Shop at the church.  She was also a Deaconess and a member of Fort Four Association, Charlestown Grange #204, trustee for the library, Welcome Wagon Hostess, and many years active with the Girls Scouts.

The family includes her husband Kenneth Norman Laramie of Charlestown, whom she married on May 25, 1941; one daughter, Sidney Ellen Laramie of LaMesa, CA; one sister, Frances Plasmati of Deltona, FL; and nieces and nephews.  She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Roxie Boone and Rita Webster and one brother, E. Sam Haskins.

A memorial service was held Tuesday afternoon, Feb.  27th at 2 p.m.  at the Charlestown Congretional Church with Ray Ellis officiating.  Interment will be at a later date in the Grafton Center Cemetery in Grafton, NH.  A time of fellowship will be held in the Pine Room of the church after services.  The family requested that donations be made in her memory to the Charlestown Congregational Church Memorial Fund, PO Box E, Charlestown, NH  03603.

Robert Lawrence Landin

South Royalton, VT–Robert Lawrence Landin, 28, of South Royalton, died Wednesday, February 28, 1996, in St.  Anne de Sorel, Cananda, after falling through the ice while fishing.

He was born in Clearwater, FL on April 21, 1967, a son of the late Thomas P.  Landin and Virginia (Reney) Landin.  He attended schools in Hartford and Woodstock, and had been employed as a cook by the former Quechee Gin Mill Restaurant in Quechee, VT and most recently by Simpson Construction Co.  in Wilder, VT.  He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and especially fishing.

Survivors include:  his mother, Virginia Moore of West Lebanon, NH; a brother, Mark Moore of Marblehead, MA; his maternal grandmother, Grace Reney of Enfield, NH; uncles–Kenneth Reney of Plainfield, NH and Walter Reney of Enfield, NH; his aunts–Dory Clifford of Hawaii and Jean Hinesley of Missouri; his fiancee, Michele Alexander and her son, Ryan; and many cousins.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert L.  Landin Memorial Fund in care of Virginia Moore, PO Box 1355, White River Junction, VT  05001.  Ricker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte M. Remacle

Canaan, NH–Charlotte M.  (Beede) Remacle, 70, died Monday, March 11, 1996 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center following a long illness.

She was born in Canaan on January 30, 1926, the daughter of Julius W. and Donalda (Defosey) Beede.  She graduated from Laconia (NH) High School and from a hairdressing school in Concord.  A hairdresser in the Upper Valley area for more than 30 years, she was married to Roger L.  “Leo” Remacle Sr.  on Sept. 22, 1973.

Mrs.  Remacle is survived by her husband; three stepsons-Frank C.  Remacle Sr. of Canadaigua, NY, Frederick V.  Remacle of Virginia Beach, VA, and William J.  Remacle of Silverdale, WA; a stepdaughter, Michele T.  Clark of North Haverhill, NH; many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; aunts and cousins.

Calling hours were Wednesday, March 13th from 7-9 p.m.  at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield, NH.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St.  Mary’s Church in Canaan.  Burial will be in the spring in Wells Cemetery in Canaan.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Canaan F.A.S.T. Squad, Canaan, NH  03741.

Bernice A. Morse

Enfield, NH–Bernice A.  (Heath) Morse, 104, died Tuesday evening, April 2, 1996 at the McKerley Healthcare Center in Lebanon, NH.  She was born in Grafton, NH May 31, 1891, the daughter of the late Daniel & Lila (Chase) Heath and was an Enfield resident for most of her life.  She attended Enfield and Grafton schools and the Bay Path Institute in Keene, NH.  She was married to Walter C.  Morse Oct.  9, 1911 in Enfield, NH.  Mr.  Morse died Nov.  2, 1987,  She was a past member of the Relham Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star; the Women’s Relief Corps; the Grafton Grange; and the Ladies Society of Congregationalists of Newport, NH.  She was active in church and town affairs.

There were no calling hours.  Graveside services will be held at the Mt.  Calm Cemetery in Enfield Center, NH will be announced at a later date.  The Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon, NH was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include:  a daughter-in-law, Edith E.  Morse of Greenbackville, VT; a grandson, Claude S.  Morse of Manchester, TN; a grandson, Thomas I. Morse of Santa Barbara, CA; a granddaughter, Gail E.  Owens of Brunswick, GA; six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C.  Morse who died Nov.  2, 1987; a daughter, Norman Spaven who died in 1990; a son, Claude V.  Morse who died in 1986; a daughter, Doris Morse who died in 1916; a grandson, Royal H.  Morse who died in 1995; six brothers and one sister.

Gladys Luella DuPlaise

Enfield, NH–Gladys Luella DuPlaise, 95, died Wednesday, April 9, 1996 at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH.  She was born in Franklin, NH April 20, 1900, the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Burbank) LaFrance.  A longtime resident of Enfield, she was a member of the Canaan Senior Center.  Most recently she resided at the McKerley Healthcare Center in Lebanon, NH and was a member of the Lebanon Senior Center.

There were no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Burial will be in the Beech Grove Cemetery in Gilmanton, NH.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, NH.

Survivors include: a son, Irving DeVoid of Brooksville, FL; a granddaughter, Carol Krum of Pawtucket, RI; a grandson, Robert DeVoid of Brooksville, FL; a granddaughter, Elenor Wescomb of Brooksville, FL; Juanita Andrew of Lakeland, FL; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

 

Antone R. Pontes Jr.

Canaan, NH–Antone R. Pontes, 70, died Wednesday April 3, 1996 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.  He was born in Fall River, MA February 10, 1926, the son of the late Antone R.  & Mary E.  (Cotta) Pontes Sr.  He was raised in Little Compton, RI and later lived in Bristol, CT while employed by Pratt and Whitney in Southington, CT retiring after 35 years of service.  Mr.  Pontes was a U.S.  Navy Veteran of WWII and had served in the Pacific Theatre.  He was a member f D.A.V.  and the American Leagion.

He had been a resident of west Canaan since 1991.  He was married to Glenda (Froloch) who died February 26, 1993.

There were no calling hours.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 20th at 10 a.m. in St.  Catherine’s Church of Little Compton, RI.  Burial will be in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery in Little Compton.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon, NH.

Survivors include:  a brother, Gilbert R.  Pontes of Little Compton, RI; a sister, Eugenia “Janice” Nickerson of Little Compton, RI; a step-son, James Arthur of PA; two nieces and five nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife.

Lena Helen Avery

Enfield, NH–Lena (Sanborn) Avery, 81, died June 6 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from respiratory and kidney failure.  She was born in Sunapee, NH on August 25, 1914, the daughter of Alton and Helen (Leavitt) Sanborn.  She was married to Frederick C.  Avery who died in 1973.  Her early married years were spent raising a family and working as a farmer in the Sunapee area.  After moving to the Enfield area in 1942 she was employed at the A.G. Dewey or Baltic Mill for 28 years as a spinner.  Most recently she was employed by Dartmouth College until retirement in 1979.  Her retirement years were spent enjoying her family, baking for the Lioness Club events, and creating beautiful gardens around her home. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 9, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Community Lutheran Church in Enfield.  Burial followed on Monday in the Eastman Cemetery in Sunapee.

Survivors include:  a son, William Avery of Enfield; a son, Arnold Avery of Standish, ME; a daughter, Dorothea Leonard of Rutland, VT; a daughter, Shirley Barnett of Swampscott, MA; a daughter, Theresa Hill of Enfield; a brother Lawrence Sanborn of Wendall, NH; a brother, Howard Sanborn of Newport, NH; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Esther Dorst-Caruso

Canaan, NH–Esther Dorst-Caruso, 84, died on Saturday, November 4, 1985 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.  Born in Whitingham, VT on October 6, 1911, the daughter of John and Edith (Fowler) Dorst.  She attended schools in Whitingham, VT and later graduated from business college as a bookkeeper.  She worked in the woolen mills in Vermont before marrying William G.  Caruso in 1945.  They lived in Williamstown, MA, Westbury, NY, New Milford, CT, and retired to Brandon, VT in 1973.  In 1989 they moved to Canaan to be closer to their family.  Mrs.  Caruso served as a pianist for the Baptist Churches in all communities they lived in and was a member of the Brandon, VT Baptist Church.  She served as a Girl Scout and Brownie Leader in in Westbury, NY and worked with her husband at the AGFA GEVAERT Film Company in Massachuesetts.  She enjoyed gardening and was a devoted wife and mother.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan with the Rev. Dale Edwards officiating.  There were no public calling hours.  Ricker Funeral Home of Lebanon was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include:  a husband, William G.  Caruso of Canaan, NH; a daughter, Patricia Caruso of Honolulu, HI; a daughter, Theresa Annunziata of New Milford, CT; a daughter, Edith Bellion of Canaan, NH; and three grandchildren.
