Rudy C. Farmer

Fortunes Rocks, ME–Rudy C. Farmer, 68, of Orford, and Fortunes Rocks, died Tuesday at his home in Fortunes Rocks.

Born in North Plainfield, NJ, he played football in high school and college, where he was a star of Syracuse’s 1957 Cotton Bowl team. He was known as a prankster and a coach of Pop Warner teams. While in New Jersey, he worked for Foley Machinery in Piscataway and was a deacon at Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church.

In 1979, he moved with his family to New Hampshire to open New England Equipment Co. in White River Jct. He later moved to Maine to work at Southworth-Milton Inc. He was a member of the Board of Associated General Contractors and had many friends in the heavy equipment industry.

Survivors include his wife, Isabelle; three children, Rudy, Christy and Dawn; a sister, Joyce; and his mother, Edith.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 pm at Saint Philips by the Sea in Fortunes Rocks.

Mr. Farmer was an animal lover, especially devoted to his late rescue dog, Charmin. Memorial donations may be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society, 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, NH 03748.

Norma A. Stewart

Lebanon, NH–Norma Adele Stewart, 78, died June 19, 2003 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Canaan, NH on June 2, 1925, a daughter of the late Clifton & Doris (Columbia) Davis. She grew up in Canaan, and was in the Class of 1944. She was married to Rankin A. Stewart on May 10, 1933 in Keene, NH. She and her husband worked on the Stewart Farm for many years. She enjoyed wildlife, reading, embroidery and collecting cow memorabilia. She had a great love for children.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1933; her parents; and 2 brothers: Gene C. Davis and Richard H. Davis.

Survivors include a son: David A. Stewart of Enfield, NH; 4 daughters: Nancy Hall of Enfield, Linda Downing of S. Royalton, VT, Carol Seamans of Enfield, NH and Barbara Gowing of Bethel, VT; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 24 at 1:00 pm in the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon with burial to follow in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan.

Lester S. Grant

Lebanon, NH–Lester S. Grant, 86, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

He was born in Hartford, VT on July 20, 1916, a son of R. Edwin and Harriet M. (Stevens) Grant, and attended school in Wilder, VT. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Army from 1940-1945. On July 23, 1941 he was married to Alice Martin in Chicopee, MA.

He lived in Wilder and was a surgical technician at the Veterans Affair Hospital in White River Jct and Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover until his retirement in 1973. He lived in Morgan, VT from 1975 until he returned to Wilder in 1995. He had lived in Lebanon for the past five years.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Peters; two brothers, Ray and Chester Grant; and three sisters, Lydia Slocum, Ruth Gray and Anna Ricker. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patricia Clough of Vernon, VT; two sons, Daniel Grant of Enfield and Paul Grant of Lebanon; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Allyn Grant of Sun City, CA; two sisters, Harriet LaBelle and Ramona Welch, both of Wilder; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held Wednesday from 6-8 pm at Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. A funeral service was held Thursday at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring at the Christian Street Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, NH 03756.

James M. Gerrish

Enfield, NH–James M. Gerrish, 81, of Enfield died on Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare Center in Hanover, NH. He was born on December 6, 1921 in Winter Harbor, ME a son of Gilbert and Ethel Gerrish. He grew up in Winter Harbor and graduated from high school there. On July 26,1942 he was married to Gloria Grey before he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge as a Sergeant in 1945 they settled in Walpole, MA where they made their home for 38 years. Mr. Gerrish had been employed by the Fimble Door Co. until his retirement in 1985. The Gerrish’s made their summer home on Crystal Lake in Enfield for many years before retiring permanently there in 1985. He was an avid golfer and a member of The Carter Golf Club in Lebanon.

He is survived by his wife Gloria of Enfield; five children: James M. Gerrish, Jr. of Walpole, MA; Gregory B. Gerrish of Franklin, MA; Karen Hall of Enfield; Debra H. Gerrish and Cameron L. Gerrish both of Norton, MA; a sister, Queenie Joy of Franklin, ME; two half-brothers; two half-sisters; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held on Friday at 2:30 pm at the Ricker Funeral Home on US Route 4 in Enfield, NH.

Helen M. Brown

Canaan, NH–Helen M. Brown, 97, died Saturday evening, December 14, 2002 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare Center in Hanover, NH. She was born in Haverhill, NH January 18, 1905, a daughter of the late William G. and Prudence (Pelton) Wetherbee. A Canaan resident since 1928, she was married May 1, 1930 to Walter R. Brown. She was a former member of the Rebekahs and the Pithian Sisters. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, cooking and crosswords. She loved taking care of her family and would also help neighbors and the elderly.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter R. Brown in 1981; a daughter Doreen Raynor in 1980; a son Harris Brown in 1940; three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include three daughters: Pauline Shaffer of Clinton, IL; Colleen Neily of West Canaan, NH; and Virginia Jalbert of Grafton, NH. Two sons: Gordon Brown Jr. and Roy Brown both of Enfield, NH; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the spring in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to David’s House, PO Box 600, Lebanon, NH 03766.

Marguerite S. Shuttleworth

Canaan, NH–Marguerite Sarah Shuttleworth, 81, died Tuesday morning February 12, 2003 at the Hanover Hill Nursing Home in Manchester, NH. She was born in Hinsdale, NH June 17, 1921, a daughter of the late Mildred (Welch) and Patrick J. Coyle. A resident of Canaan for most of her life, she was an active member of the community. She was a former member of the Grange, the Canaan Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid Society. She was also an active member and held various offices in the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She was married to Harold E. Shuttleworth who died June 17, 1985.

Survivors include a daughter: Louise H. Perrier of Candia, NH; a son: William A. Shuttleworth of Fair Haven, NJ; a sister: Harriet Bean of Allenstown, NH; 2 brothers: Richard Munn of Deerfield, MA and David Munn of West Lebanon, NH; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday February 18 at 1:00 pm in the Canaan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Williams officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Wells Cemetery in Canaan, NH.

Emile I. Chouinard

West Lebanon, NH–Emile Joseph Chouinard, 91, died Wednesday February 12, 2003 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Enfield, NH June 30, 1911, a son of the late Joseph and Dora (DeCato) Chouinard. He had worked many years in several area woolen mills including the Baltic Mills in Enfield. He had also been employed by B&M Railroad, and by the Hanover Inn in Hanover, NH where he retired in 1977 as a carpenter. He was a member of St. Helena’s Parish of Enfield, the Knights of Columbus and the 50 Plus Club. Mr. Chouinard was a very active participant in Enfield community affairs. He was a regular attendee of Town Meetings, had served as a volunteer firefighter for many years and was an active member of the Enfield Historical Society. He had been a lifelong Enfield resident until moving to the Quail Hollow community in West Lebanon 3 years ago.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter Edna; a brother Edward Chouinard and a sister Arlene Chouinard both of Enfield. Survivors include his wife: Victoria (Godin) Chouinard of West Lebanon, NH; a son: Robert Chouinard of Lake Jackson, TX; a daughter and son-in-law: Joan and Jim Houghton of Chester, VT; a sister: Rena Perkins of Concord, NH; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren (and expecting another in May).

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning Feb. 14 at 10:00 am in St. Helena’s Church in Enfield, NH. Burial will be at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Palliative Care Program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Attn: Michele Clark, Office of Development, 1 Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, NH 03756.

Kenneth “Pete” Peterson

Enfield, NH–Kenneth “Pete” Peterson, 71, died Saturday, February 15, 2003 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Morrisville, PA May 8, 1931, a son of the late George and Hazel (Bickel) Peterson Jr. He grew up in Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. On July 25, 1966 he was married to Shirley Chase in Maryland. They made their home in Enfield Center following their marriage. He was employed as a tractor trailer driver for Daniel’s Transportation on a mail route. He also had worked at Ward Baking-Tip Top Bakery in White River Jct., VT and for St. Johnsbury Trucking. He later worked at Dartmouth College retiring from there in 1990. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping with his family and was an avid fisherman.

He was predeceased by a brother: Lou Peterson; and 4 sisters: Mary Jane Peterson, Mary Ann Peterson, Ethel Peterson and Elizabeth Peterson.

He leaves his wife: Shirley Peterson of Enfield Center, NH; 6 children: Diana McDonald of NJ, Lorraine Byard of NJ, Claire Brown of CA, “Peanut” Gray of West Lebanon, NH, Joseph Peterson Sr. of Sarasota, FL and Katrina Durkee of Thetford, VT; a sister: Adeline Pone of Bristol, PA; a brother: Ralph Peterson of Dade City, FL; 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St. in Lebanon, NH Wednesday evening from 6-9 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 am in the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Warner officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield, NH.

Thomas W. Nylund

Enfield, NH–Thomas W. Nylund, 53, of Enfield, died Thursday, March 13, 2003 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH following a long illness.

He was born in Framingham, MA on June 29,1949, a son of Walter and Louise (Story) Nylund. He grew up in Wyland, MA and graduated from Wayland High School where he was an All State Football player and held a track and field team shot-put record. He later attended Bridgton Maine Academy and the University of Massachusetts where he played football. He was employed by Mailman Construction in Wayland as a heavy equipment operator for several years. He was married to Helen F. Palmer on April 24, 1976. They moved to Enfield in 1977. After moving to the Upper Valley he was employed by Moulton Construction and United Construction before starting Nylund Building Contractors, Inc. with his brother, Mark in 1984. He worked with the company until he became ill in August 2002.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, Jeeping in his antique CJ-5 Jeep. He would be remembered for the practical jokes he played on a regular basis and his sense of humor. He was a member of the Enfield Outing Club, NRA, Enfield Lions Club, where he served on the Board of Directors, Jay Cee’s in Lebanon, NH Water Ski Assoc., American Water Ski Assoc., and was active at LaSalette Shrine in Enfield, where he was rebuilding a stone wall before his illness. He was a Little League Coach and played on the Enfield Co-Ed Softball League.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Nyland, on May 9, 1997.

He is survived by his parents, Walter and Louise Nylund of Enfield; a son, Brian Nylund of Georgetown, TX; a granddaughter, Lily Frances Nylund of Georgetown, TX; two sisters, Nancy Corrette of Lyme and Linda Nylund Saada of Wellesley, MA; a brother, Mark Nylund of Canaan; many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Sunday evening from 7-9 at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St. in Lebanon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 am at the LaSalette Shrine Chapel, Rte 4-A in Enfield.

Marjorie C. Grace

Lebanon, NH–Marjorie C. Grace, 55, died Sunday, March 16, 2003 at her home in Lebanon, NH following a long illness. She was born in Hanover, NH August 14, 1947, a daughter of Frederick and Evelyn (Wheeler) Charbono. A resident of the Upper Valley all of her life, she was a graduate of Mascoma Valley Regional High School. For many years she was employed by Whitman Communications. She enjoyed cats and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include 2 daughters: Velvet Grace of Canaan, NH and Stacia Hall of Virginia Beach, VA; 3 brothers: Lawrence Charbono of Enfield, Stanley Charbono and Ronald Charbono both of Sun City, AZ; 2 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister: Jacqueline O’Donnell.
