Carl J. Laurie Sr.

East Plainfield, NH–Carl Joseph Laurie Sr., 88, died Wednesday morning March 19, 2003 at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in White River Jct., VT following a long illness. He was born in Strafford, VT October 18, 1914, a son of the late David & Belle Rose (Raymo) Laurie. He lived in Norwich, VT and attended schools there. He was a veteran of the US Army Medical corps during WWII and served in the Philippines and Luzon Island. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star, and the Victory Medal. He lost his only brother in the infantry also on Luzon Island. On September 27, 1947 he was married to Louise (Tolbert) and had 5 children. Carl and Louise spent their entire married life in the Upper Valley of NH and since 1991 had made their home with their daughter and son-in-law in East Plainfield, NH. Carl had worked a various jobs in the Upper Valley. Most recently he had been employed at the Windsor (VT) Foundry. He had retired from the E. Cummings Leather Co. after more than 20 years of service.

He was predeceased by a sister Mabel Quimby and a brother Eli P. Laurie. Survivors include his wife Louise of East Plainfield; a daughter Betty Dellabough of East Plainfield; 4 sons: Carl J. Laurie Jr. of Concord, NH, Edward A. Laurie of Enfield, NH, Raymond E. Laurie and Gary W. Laurie both of Lebanon, NH; a sister, Rose Coleman of Lebanon, NH; a granddaughter, Jolene Laurie of Lebanon, NH; 4 grandsons: Jeffery Dellabough of Lebanon, NH, Corey Dellabough of Wilder, VT, Jonathan Laurie of Denver, CO and William Buckwold of Lebanon, NH; 2 great-grandaughters: Kimberly Dellabough and Danielle Welch both of Hartland, VT; 2 great-grandsons: Cody and Brandon Dellabough of Wilder, VT; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St., in Lebanon, NH Thursday evening from 7-9. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Dale Edwards officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the East Plainfield Cemetery.

Chester W. Kane

Canaan, NH–Chester James Alfred Wellington Wright Kane, 83, formerly of Canaan, NH and Houston, TX, died December 18, 2002 at the Woodlawn Nursing Home in Newport, NH following a long illness. He was born in Boston, MA November 26, 1920. The son of the late Anne (Wright) and Thomas Kane. During his acquaintance of John Kennedy. Chester was a veteran of WWII serving with the Third Armored Division as a Medic. Chet married his former wife Cozette (Davis) Kane in Oakridge, TN in 1946. After serving in the Army, Chet attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA and graduated with a degree in Political Science and always enjoyed having people of different nationalities in his home for dinner and discussion with him and his former wife Cozette.

Chester also enjoyed cooking and moved in the 1960’s to Houston, TX where he had an upscale restaurant and catering business called “Chester Kane’s” in which many of our astronauts and others in the space industry dined.

During his later years Chet moved back to Canaan, NH to help care for his mother until her death several years later. Chet remained at the homestead until his health required that he move to the convalescent facility where he resided until the time of his death.

Chester leaves a cousin: Phyllis (Schantz) Hansen of Edison, NJ; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, friends in Canaan, NH and Houston, TX; and to those who enjoyed his culinary skills in Houston, he will be missed.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Canaan, NH. The Ricker Funeral Homes and Crematory of Lebanon, NH is in charge of arrangements.

Henry M. Winter

Enfield, NH–Henry M. Winter, 80, died Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Brooklyn, NY May 14, 1922, a son of the late Mary (Major) and William West Winter. He attended the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY and DePaul University. For many years he was employed by the U.S. Government at the Panama Canal Zone Co.; the Dept. of the Air Force; and the Dept. of Defense. He was married to Nancy (Tobin) on June 8, 1948.

He was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Tobin) Winter who died June 6, 1998; and a brother William West Winter.

Survivors include a daughter: Katherine Elizabeth Oaks of Charlton, NY; and two sons: Andrew Aylwin Winter of Lincoln University, PA and Henry M. Winter Jr. of Mulberry, FL; two sisters: Mary Fanning of OR and Katherine Winter of Jennersville, PA; four grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to The Alzheimer’s Assoc., 10 Ferry St.-suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Laura E. Fortier

Lebanon, NH–Laura Elizabeth (Blain) Fortier, 93, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at the Alice Peck Day Extended Care Facility in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Dorchester, NH December 9, 1908, a daughter of the late Raoul & Alice (Simard) Blain. A lifelong area resident, she was married to Joseph A. Fortier Sr., who died Dec 8, 1979. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish of Lebanon and the Catholic Daughters of America.

For many years she worked in the family business: J.A. Fortier, Inc. – a local bottled gas and appliance business. She enjoyed crocheting, bingo and slot machines.

She was predeceased by her husband; 3 sisters: Lillian Jette, Irene LeBlanc and Rosetta Boudrea; and 5 brothers: Conrad, Maurice, Raymond, Gerard and Robert Blain.

Survivors include a daughter: Rita A. Dowling of Forest, VA; 2 sons: Joseph A. Fortier Jr. of Lincoln, VT and Raymond A. Fortier of Long Island, NY; a sister: Rita R. LeBlanc of Largo, FL; a brother: Arthur Blain of Enfield, NH; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St, Lebanon on Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday morning at 10 am in the Sacred Heart Church in Lebanon. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Elmer M. Shuttleworth

Canaan, NH–Elmer Merton Shuttleworth, 81, of Canaan, died on Wednesday, June 12th at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Jct, VT. He was born in East Andover, NH on March 30, 1921, a son of Arthur and Florence (Atkins) Shuttleworth. He has lived on his family’s farm on Cider Mill Rd in Canaan since he was two years old. He was an engineer on the Boston & Maine Railroad and owned and operated Elmer’s Store and Pool Hall in Canaan for many years. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII serving on the USS Alabama. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars in White River Jct. and the Lebanon Lodge of Elks. He was known as an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his longtime companion Louise C. Poell of Concord, NH; a nephew, William Shuttleworth of New Jersey and many friends.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held next Sunday, June 23rd at 2:00 pm at the Shuttleworth Farm on Cider Mill Rd in Canaan.

Phyllis A. Disbrow

Canaan, NH–Phyliss Anne Disbrow of Ocala, Fl and Canaan died Sunday May 5, 2002 in Ocala following a brief illness.

She was born July 30, 1932, in New York, a daughter of Philip B. and Mary (Faranda) Spano. She attended Hofstra University, and completed her registered nurse degree at Brooklyn Methodist School of Nursing in 1955, then worked at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center, NY.

In 1957, she was married to Robert F. Disbrow, then raised a family and moved in 1971 to Canaan, where she became involved in community and service work. She supported Girl and Boy Scouts, 4-H, Canaan Players, handcraft groups and the Lioness Club. She was charter president for the Canaan Club, First New Hampshire District Governess for Lioness and a surgical nurse at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital for several years before starting a successful Avon business.

She was an avid flower gardener and established large flower gardens that will stand forever as a memorial to her dedication to beauty. She retired in 1989 to Ocala, FL where she continued to be active in community affairs.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Lou Disbrow; two sons, Craig Disbrow of Canaan and Andrew Disbrow of Grafton; a sister, Mildred Spano, a sister, Doris Reinceke of Morristown, NJ; many niesces and nephews and all of Ocala.

A memorial service will be held in August in Canaan.

Doris M. Porter

Lebanon, NH–Doris M. Porter, 78 of Lebanon, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following many years of failing health. She was born at home in East Plainfield on Dec. 27, 1923, a daughter of Fred and May (Goodwin) Barker. She received her early education at the one room school in East Plainfield. The last two years of her education she worked as a janitor, attending wood fires and carrying water.

Mrs. Porter graduated from Lebanon High School in the class of 1942. Following graduation, she was employed by H.W. Carter and Son, Carter and Churchill, The Lebanon Drug Store and later at C.H. Davis Jewelry part-time. This past summer she was in the Lebanon Alumni Day Parade celebrating her 60th class reunion.

On October 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Clinton H. Porter of North Plainfield. Except for a year at Rosewald Farm in Hillsboro, NH, nearly all her married life was spent on the old Gile Farm on Hardy Hill, Lebanon, known as Cottage Hill Farm under their ownership. She loved farming, especially her gardens and flowers. For more than 25 years she was involved with arts and crafts, belonging to the NH League of Arts & Crafts, and Merricrafters of Meriden. She became well known for her homemade jams, jellies, pickles, and for her hand-crafted paper weights, pins, pendants decorated with nuts, berries, seeds, and flowers gathered from all over the farm.

Because of her interests in gardening, she was a long time member and past president of the Lebanon Garden Club. She was a 55 year member of the Meriden Grange where she won numerous prizes in sewing and cooking contests. In 1978 she realized her ambition of publishing her own cookbook. She was a former member of the Suburban Club, Lebanon Historical Society and long time member and past Deacones of the Meriden Baptist Church.

Over the years she had a special ministry of sending out hundreds of birthday, get well and sympathy cards making sure they were just right for the recipient and often enclosing a note or poem to help bring comfort and joy. Having a strong Christian faith, she believed in living according to the Bible. She loved her home, family and neighbors, and loved helping other people as her health would permit.

She is survived by her husband Clifton of Lebanon, two sons John of Boscawen and Norman of Lebanon, two grandsons William and Carl of Lebanon, several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Roy “Skip” Barker and Earl Barker.

Friends called at the Meriden Baptist Church on Rte 120 in Meriden on Friday from 1-2 pm. A funeral service followed at 2 pm. A funeral service followed at 2 pm with the Rev. Harold Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Plainfield Cemetery.

William O. Neily Sr.

Canaan, NH– William O. Neily Sr., 85, died Saturday night November 16, 2002 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Canaan Center, NH January 16, 1917, a son of the late Blanche (Butman) & August B. Neily Sr. A lifelong resident of Canaan Ctr., he attended local schools and played football for Canaan High School. He worked for the C.C.C. Camps during the Great Depression. Later he was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Windsor, VT retiring after more than 35 years of service. Mr. Neily loved baseball and the Red Sox; his beautiful and often photographed flower gardens; and reading.

He was predeceased by five sisters: Eleanor Picard, Violet Fields, Florence Levesque, Charlotte Neily, and Caroline Woodbury; and two brothers: Harry Neily and Wesley Neily.

Survivors include his wife: Doris Buckman of Canaan, NH; four children: William O. Neily Jr. of Springfield, MA, Gayle Cook of Franklin, NH, Stephen E. Neily of Lakeworth, FL, and Patricia E. Downing of North Augusta, SC; a sister: Irene Dulac of Lebanon, NH; a brother: August Neily Jr. of Canaan, NH; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hester E. Legere

Lebanon, NH–Hester E. Legere, 83, died Monday morning November 18, 2002 at the Lebanon Center of Genesis ElderCare in Lebanon, NH following a brief illness. She was born in Dixmount, ME November 1, 1919, a daughter of the late Myrl W. & Eunice (Tinker) Brown. She retired from the Colonial Bookstore in Lebanon where she had worked for many years. She had many hobbies that she loved, including working with crafts and reading.

Hester was predeceased by her husband Frederick “Fred” Legere who died April 22, 1994; and by a sister, Francis E. “Fran” Day who died April 10, 2001.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law: Mary Ann and Bill Mousley of Enfield, NH; a sister: Hazel Chadbourne of ME; a granddaughter: Heather Newman of Claremont, NH; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Private burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lebanon, NH.

Wilmer L. Brownell

Danbury, NH–Wilmer L. “Bill” Brownell, 79, of Brad Chase Road, died Sept. 8, 2002 at Concord Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Nashua, NH of Feb. 20, 1923 the son of John L. and Marjorie (Anderson) Brownell. He spent his early years in Antrim.

Mr. Brownell joined the Merchant Marines in 1942 and then served as a staff sergeant in the US Marine Corps in 1943 with a sharpshooter badge during WWII, seeing action in the South Pacific-Marina Islands. He trained officers in aircraft and surface craft recognition in the states. After the war, Mr. Brownell worked on road construction and was a conservation officer in the seven-town district around New London. He also bought and sold many pieces of property. He and his wife established the Aqua Tree and Berry Farm in 1967, planting more than 2500 blueberry bushes. He practiced sustainable forestry management, conservation and improving habitat for wildlife. He was a skilled woodsman, hunter, trapper, fisherman, tracker and also raised and trained his own hunting dogs. He enjoyed prospecting, mineral collecting, bee keeping and wild honey bee hunting. He also had a great respect for Native American culture and love of their art.

Mr. Brownell was a member of King Solomon’s Lodge 14 F & AM of Elkins and Lee Knap American Post 69 of Danbury.

Family members include his wife of 58 years, Mary (Huntoon) Brownell of Danbury, five children: Terre Brownell of Wilmot; Ilona Adams of Fountain Hills, AZ; Ronald Brownell of Alexandria; Alan Brownell of Danbury and Lance Brownell of Wilmot; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

There were no calling hours. A private service was held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to King Solomon’s Lodge 14, PO Box 295, Elkins 03233 or the Danbury Community Center, 15 High St., Danbury 03230.
