Louis N. Auger

Troy, NH–Louis N. Auger was born in Troy, NH, on November 21, 1929, and died at the age of 69 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on April 17, 1999 at 7:00 am.

He attended Troy schools and was a graduate of Keene High School, class of 1949. In 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during the Korean conflict. Following discharge in 1953, he returned to Troy and was married to Phyllis Ward. He worked for 35 years as a machinist for Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, VT, returning as a foreman. In 1980 he was married to Angelina Meyerhofer and they made their home in Springfield, VT, before moving to New Jersey where he worked at Classic Frames. They moved back to the Upper Valley in 1987 and he worked at Split Ball Bearing until 1994. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus of Springfield and a member of the 4th Degree. He was a 19 year member of the Canaan Assembly of God Church in Canaan and was a member of the Men’s Ministry. Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home on School Street in Lebanon on Tuesday evening, April 20, from 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Canaan Assembly of God Church on Wednesday at 2:00 pm. with Dr. David Baker, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Canaan Street Cemetery.

Survivors include: Wife, Angelina Auger, of Canaan; Sons, Michael and Brian Auger, of New Port Richey, FL, and David Auger, of Port Charlotte, FL. Daughters, Marcia-Jean Auger, of Trilby, FL and Joanne Purington, of Springfield, VT; Stepdaughter Suzanne Winchester of Grantham, stepson Stephen Ruskuski, of Mexico, 8 grandchildren, a brother, Leo Auger, of Keene, and Sisters: Gloria Auger, of Lexington, MA; Rita Auger and Aline Brailey, of Keene, and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline Mary Black

Canaan, NH–Pauline Mary Black, 84, a lifelong resident of Canaan and Orange, NH, died Sunday April 25, 1999 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare Center in Hanover, NH. She was born in Orange, NH on July 17, 1914, the daughter of the late Everett E. and Viola M. (Lane) Eastman. For many years she had been employed at the Baltic Woolen Mills of Enfield, NH. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Canaan, and loved the outdoors and gardening. She was married to Elwin S. Black who died in 1980.

There were no calling hours. Graveside Committal Services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm in the Orange (NH) Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: The Canaan F.A.S.T. Squad, Canaan, NH 03741 or to: Mascoma Health Services, Main St., Canaan, NH 03741.

Caroline Neily Woodbury

Canaan, NH–Caroline Neily Woodbury, 74, passed away early Friday, May 7, 1999, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born August 16, 1924 in Canaan Center, NH, one of ten children born to August B. and Blanche (Butman) Neily. She graduated from Canaan High School in 1942.

She was married to John S. Woodbury on October 12, 1946 in Exeter, NH. They lived in West Lebanon and Lebanon, where she worked at Split Ballbearing, retiring after many years.

Caroline lived her life enthusiastically and to the fullest; taking great pride and joy in family and friends, especially her four grandchildren. She also found great pleasure in her love of art, becoming an accomplished artist through the years.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Sheila and Ernie Plumb of Andover, VT and Ann and Kevin Cattabriga of Canaan; four grandchildren; Daniel Plumb, Miranda Plumb, Mathew Cattabriga and Meghan Cattabriga; two sisters, Eleanor Ricard and Irene Dulac of Lebanon; two brothers, Bill Neily and August Neily of Canaan; many nieces, nephews and a several very close friends.

Calling hours will be held Monday, May 10 from 7-9 pm at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Tuesday May 11 at 2 pm; followed by burial at the West Lebanon Cemetery at a later date.

Florence M. Selby

Roxbury, NH–Florence M. Selby, 73, of Roxbury, NH died May 28,1999 at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, NH.

She was born in Dorchester, NH on Nov. 8, 1925, and the daughter of Wilfred and Yvonne (Dupris) Blain. She attended school in Canaan and Enfield and graduated from Enfield High School in 1944. She moved to Keene around 1956 and also lived in Melbourne, FL. She moved to Roxbury about 12 years ago.

Survivors include her mother Yvonne Blain of Lebanon. A son, Robert Selby of Keene; a daughter, Carol Carmier of Roxbury; four brothers, Wilfred Blain, Richard Blain, John Blain all of Enfield, NH and Francis Blain of Melbourne; two sisters, Euginia Hall of Enfield and Yvonne Wescott of Las Cruces, NM; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at St. Mary Cemetery in Claremont at the convenience of the family. The Fletcher Funeral Home in Keene is in charge of arrangements.

Velma L. Bailey

Gettysburg, PA–Velma L. Bailey, 38, of 2214 Biglerville Rd., Gettysburg, PA, died Thursday May 6, in Gettysburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 20, 1960, she was a daughter of Corine Wigg Joyce Smith Day of Bristol, NH and the late Glenwood Joyce.

She is survived by daughter Amanda E. Bailey of Gettysburg; two sons, Michael Bailey of Aspers and Andrew P. Bailey of Gettysburg; and two sisters, Linda Eastment of Pittsfield, NH and Lorine Dyer of Dorchester, NH.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 am May 10 at Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg. Graveside services will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in Grafton, NH on May 15, 1999 at 2:00 pm.

Charlene R. (Smith) Bowen

Grafton, NH–Charlene R. (Smith) Bowen, 34, of Sargent Hill Road, died April 16,1999. She was born in Concord, NH on Jan. 31, 1965. She had resided in Franklin, NH before moving to Grafton 14 years ago. For the past year she had been employed by Dartmouth College in Controlled Storage Security. She worked with the Friends of the Grafton Community Building and helped her husband with his painting business. She enjoyed cooking, dining out, and had a good sense of humor. Members of her family surviving include her husband of 14 years, Thomas W. Bowen of Grafton, NH; seven children, Thomas W. Bowen, Jr. of Northfield, NH, Michelle Moses of Salisbury, NH, Georgette Bowen of Franklin, NH, Josephine Claremont of Laconia, NH, Josh Smith of Laconia, NH, Levi Bowen of Grafton, NH, and Timmy Bowen of Grafton, NH; four grandchildren, Zachary, Jasmine, Nicole and Craig; her father, Carlton Smith of Franklin, NH; her mother, Nancy Parris of Andover, NH; two brothers, Steven Smith of Boscawen, NH and Robert Smith of Penacook, NH; a sister, Joyce Parris of Boston, MA; several stepbrothers and stepsisters; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Ellen Lucy Gowing

Canaan, NH–Ellen Lucy (Cross) Gowing, 71, died Tuesday morning May 18, 1999 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. SHe had fought with illnesses including diabetes and high blood pressure following open-heart surgery in 1980.

Ellen was born in Canaan, NH September 20, 1927, the daughter of the late Pearle and Bertha (Grace) Cross and was a lifelong Canaan resident. She was married to Cecil C. Gowing on July 15, 1946. She had worked for Carter’s Overalls for 3 years and later was employed by the Baltic Woolen Mills for over 15 years. She enjoyed crafts, camping, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm in the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Warner officiating. Burial will follow in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH.

Raymond Everett Estes Sr.

Canaan, NH–Raymond Everett Estes Sr., 72, died Monday morning May 24, 1999 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare Center in Hanover, NH. He was born in Lebanon, NH on October 19, 1926, the son of the late Everett A. & Grace E. (Bassett) Estes. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. A lifelong Upper Valley resident he had been a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) at the Veterans Hospital in White River Jct., VT for over 36 years. He later was employed by the Lebanon Key Shop for several years, and also enjoyed rock collecting. He was married in White River Jct., VT on Sept. 1, 1948 to Dorothy Edna (Carter) who died July 14, 1993.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside Committal Services will be held Thursday morning at 11am at the Valley Cemetery in Lebanon, NH with the Rev. John Crilley officiating.

He was a 60 Plus year life member of the Hartford Lodge of Elks and a past member of the Lebanon Moose Lodge. Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM. An Elks Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the Funeral Home in Lebanon. Canaan, NH–Gene Clifton Davis, 68, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born in Canaan, NH on May 17, 1930, the son of the late Clifton I. & Doris (Columbia) Davis. A lifelong Canaan resident, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Canaan High School – Class of 1948. He had been employed as a custodian for the Canaan schools and also by the former Baltic Mills. For over 30 years he owned and operated Davis Oil Service in Canaan until retiring in 1990. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cutting wood, maple sugaring, baking, and Canaan town history. He was married July 2, 1957 to Edith (Doe).

Friends called at the Ricker Funeral Home, Route 4 in Enfield, Saturday evening from 7-9pm. Graveside Committal Services will be held at a later date in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, NH.
